Actress Marla Louissaint Speaks on Overcoming Obstacles, Achieving Dreams

#BlackStarPower - Yesterday, Trae sat down with Award-Winning Actress Marla Louissaint to discuss her journey and role in Hadestown. Louissaint spoke about her passion for theater and growing up in a household where being a performer wasn't necessarily her parents' first choice.

"I raised a Jehovah's Witness coming up in New York City, and it wasn't really allowed to have a dream of being on the stage and being perceived by all," Louissaint said. "Being in a conservative household it was more of an extracurricular that we did for fun on and off."

Louissaint’s life changed in high school, when she won a Jimmy Award (the high school version of the Tony Awards). From that point on, she was able to study and perfect her craft while still pursuing computer science.

"Coming from a Haitian household, it's the first generation dream to be anythuing but a performer because we know how hard it is to find that big contract like Hadestown," Louissaint said. "This is a dream come true for both my younger self and my current self."

Hadestown opens at the Paramount Theatre on October 31st and runs through November 5th. Tickets are available at stgpresents.org
