Adonis Ducksworth’s Vision for District 2

"I've seen firsthand the challenges we face, and I'm committed to working tirelessly to find solutions." - Adonis Ducksworth

By Omari Salisbury

Adonis Ducksworth, the Transportation Policy and Operations Manager in Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell’s office, has been selected as one of six finalists for the vacant Seattle City Council D2 seat. Ducksworth's platform centers on public safety, economic opportunity, and community engagement, particularly focusing on youth development and infrastructure investment.

Motivations and Experience

Ducksworth cites his personal experiences and concerns as a Rainier Beach resident for the past ten years as key motivators for his candidacy. He expresses a desire to improve safety and economic conditions in the district, stating, "Our house got broken into a couple times...we're seeing all this stuff happen, shootings and whatnot." These personal encounters with crime have fueled his commitment to finding solutions and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.  "I'm running because I care deeply about District 2 and its residents," Ducksworth stated at a recent community event. "I've seen firsthand the challenges we face, and I'm committed to working tirelessly to find solutions."

His professional background includes experience in community engagement and policy development at the consulting firm Enviroissues, SDOT, and within the mayor's office. Ducksworth believes this experience gives him a strong understanding of city government processes and the ability to navigate complex policy issues. "My experience in the mayor's office has given me a deep understanding of how city government works," Ducksworth explained. "I know how to get things done, and I'm ready to hit the ground running on day one."

Vision for District 2

Ducksworth's vision for District 2 focuses on public safety, economic development, and community engagement. He proposes a multi-pronged approach to public safety, including increased police presence and investment in youth programs.

Public Safety and Youth Development

Ducksworth acknowledges the need to address public safety concerns in the district. He proposes both increased police presence and alternative pathways for young people. "One end of it is police and having more of some type of presence...On the other end, we got to give kids, young people, a different path," he says. This suggests a balanced approach that combines law enforcement with community-based initiatives to prevent crime and provide opportunities for youth. "We need to ensure our streets are safe, but we also need to invest in our young people and give them the opportunities they need to succeed."

One of his specific proposals is to break ground on the Rainier Beach skate park, viewing it as a way to provide a safe and engaging space for youth. He believes skateboarding can foster a sense of community and provide positive opportunities for young people. This proposal reflects his understanding of the importance of recreational spaces in promoting youth development and well-being. "The Rainier Beach skate park has been a long time coming," Ducksworth stated. "It's time to break ground and give our young people the safe and engaging space they deserve."

Economic Development and Community Engagement

Ducksworth also highlights the importance of economic development and community engagement. He criticizes the lack of retail space in affordable housing developments and advocates for mixed-use development to promote business opportunities. By encouraging the inclusion of retail spaces in housing developments, he aims to create a more vibrant and economically sustainable community. "We need to do more to support our local businesses," Ducksworth said. "That means creating opportunities for them to thrive, and ensuring that our neighborhoods have the amenities residents need."

He also plans to host community forums to establish a framework for engagement with the city and to spotlight positive aspects of the district. Ducksworth promises to listen to residents' concerns and ensure their voices are heard in decision-making. "I want to hear from the residents of District 2," Ducksworth said. "I want to know what their concerns are, and what their vision is for the future of our community."

Addressing Homelessness

Ducksworth acknowledges the complexity of the homelessness issue and proposes a range of interventions, including shelters, tiny homes, and recovery programs. He emphasizes the need for tailored solutions that address the diverse needs of the homeless population. This suggests a nuanced understanding of the issue and a willingness to explore multiple pathways to address it. "Homelessness is a complex issue with no easy solutions," Ducksworth acknowledged. "We need to be compassionate and provide support to those in need, while also working to address the root causes of homelessness."

Navigating City Politics

Ducksworth's experience in city government presents both potential advantages and challenges. While his insider knowledge could be beneficial, some may question his independence from the mayor's office. Ducksworth asserts that he would be guided by his own values and the needs of District 2 residents. This highlights the potential tension between his experience in the mayor's office and his ability to act independently as a council member.   "I have my own vision for District 2," Ducksworth asserted. "I will always put the needs of my constituents first."

Personal Connections

Ducksworth emphasizes his personal connection to the district and his commitment to maintaining a balanced lifestyle that includes family, fitness, and skateboarding. He believes that his personality and dedication will resonate with council members and D2 residents. His mention of skateboarding not only reflects his personal interests but also reinforces his commitment to youth-oriented initiatives. "I'm a husband, a father, and a member of this community," Duscksworth said. "I'm also a skateboarder, and I believe that my passion for skateboarding reflects my commitment to youth and to building a strong and vibrant community."

The Road Ahead

Ducksworth is open to the possibility of running for the District 2 seat in the fall but remains focused on his current goals and responsibilities. He prioritizes his family and aims to balance his political aspirations with his personal life. This indicates a pragmatic approach to his political career and a recognition of the demands of public office. "My family is my top priority," Ducksworth said. "I'm committed to finding a balance between my political aspirations and my personal life."

Conclusion

Adonis Ducksworth's candidacy for Seattle City Council District 2 focuses on public safety, economic development, and community engagement. His experience in city government and personal connection to the district shape his platform. As the selection process proceeds, council members and D2 residents will have the opportunity to evaluate his proposals in the upcoming forums and decide whether his vision aligns with their priorities for District 2 and the council as a whole.
