Bill Wright's Legacy Honored with Golf Course Renaming

A historic moment unfolded in the heart of Beacon Hill as the city celebrated the renaming of the Jefferson Park Golf Course to the Bill Wright Golf Complex. This momentous occasion marked the first time in the city's history that a park was renamed to honor a citizen, a testament to the profound impact Bill Wright had on the community and the sport of golf.

A Legacy of Inclusion and Excellence

Bill Wright, a pioneering figure in the world of golf, broke barriers and paved the way for Black golfers to excel in a sport that had long been exclusive. A graduate of Franklin High School, Wright's unwavering determination and exceptional skill challenged the prevailing narratives of the time, proving that talent and passion transcended race. His journey in golf led him to become a celebrated athlete and mentor, leaving an indelible mark on the sport and the community.

Derek Liddell, a family member of Bill Wright and the President of the AP National Golf Club, spoke about the significance of the renaming, stating, "This is a historic renaming for a citizen of our city who was fighting against discrimination for all people, he was fighting for inclusion before inclusion was popular in 1947 so blacks and non-whites could have a chance to play the game that they love."

Liddell also shared personal insights into Wright's character, describing him as "just Uncle Bill, who was just good to be around." He emphasized Wright's influence on his own life, saying, "He was somebody who would beat you with his mind... As I went in my career... how do I break barriers so the next engineers that come behind me don't have to fight to get their voice heard?"

A Community United in Celebration

The renaming ceremony drew a diverse crowd of community members, friends, family, and city officials, all united in their admiration for Bill Wright's legacy.

Robert Woody Woodard, a past president of the Fir State Golf Club and a member of the Bill Wright team, reflected on Wright's impact, stating, "Bill Wright was a part of that legacy... mentorship that we get besides the athletic part, we can go back to Jackie Robinson, we can go back to Joe Lewis."

Woodard also emphasized the importance of inclusivity and the role of the community in shaping the future, saying, "We need everyone, everyone... We have to help be a part of change."

Kathy Colombo, a member of the Friends of Bill Wright committee, spoke passionately about Wright's journey, stating, "He persevered, navigated the pathway towards fulfilling his dream, and it was not an easy path."

Colombo highlighted Wright's character, noting his "gratefulness and kindness," and expressed her hope for the future of the golf complex, saying, "My hope is that people will see... the Bill Wright Golf Complex, and will choose to go... because they know and will appreciate the inclusivity that exists here."

A Beacon of Hope for Future Generations

The renaming of the golf complex serves as a powerful symbol of progress and a beacon of hope for future generations. It sends a message that barriers can be broken, dreams can be achieved, and that inclusivity is essential for a thriving community.

Harold Buzz Coe, a classmate of Bill Wright's from Franklin High School, captured the sentiment of the day, saying, "It's a proud day. Bill was a good person, and anything that we can bestow on him is a good thing."

Bill Grinstein, a longtime friend of Wright's, expressed his pride in the community and the recognition of Wright's contributions, stating, "I just felt that the community... a lot of people here today that I'd known over the years involved in either War on Poverty effort or social progress and discrimination and it just... I just had a sense of pride in our community."

As the sun set on the newly christened Bill Wright Golf Complex, it was clear that this was not just a celebration of one man's achievements, but a celebration of the enduring spirit of a community. A community that, through its commitment to inclusivity, excellence, and the power of shared dreams, is shaping a brighter future for all. Click here to learn more about the Bill Wright Golf Complex
