Black Artists You Should Know: Kimisha Turner

I met Kimisha some years back and was captivated not only by her art but by her presence. She has to be the most kind and giving artist I’ve met. Kimisha is co-creator of the I AM Processions, an activation that invites Black and Brown women to share and commune in the beauty and divinity of our existence. A space that is never afforded us without our own doing. This gift is proof of Kimisha’s connection to the divine and her collaborative spirit. I got a chance to chat with Kimisha and she  let us know in her own words what’s new and what’s to come.

“Since our interview I have been getting settled in my new home in NJ. I am really loving what it has to offer me, my sister and my son. Being around family has been life changing.

Art wise, I have received my first Artist grant from New Jersey which I am excited about. I have applied for 4 more so fingers crossed :) .

I have recently finished a private commission for a client in Seattle that I am super proud of. It was a really fun collaboration that had to do with their family tree. They ultimately were really happy with the results.

I also had the honor of being chosen by Amazon to create a mural for their inaugural Shine Conference, honoring Black Women in Leadership. I was able to showcase it in front of 400 attendees and that piece is now part of Amazon's permanent collection. It hangs in public view in the Doppler building downtown in Amazon Headquarters. I am very proud of this piece as it reflects upon the strength of Black Women and the paths we take to move up in the world.

Other than that... I am focused on my son going back to school for the first time in a couple of years, my new job I recently acquired to supplement my income in between art projects and building an e-commerce site so that I can share my designs in a more accessible way.

I am excited to continue to work with VMC on future projects and can't wait to see what's next in store for me, my sister and my son here on the East Coast.”

Kimisha, we miss you in Seattle, but we know you are going to make an amazing community on the east coast and look forward to all the greatness you will bring.
