Call to Conscience: Seattle's Black History Month Museum Celebrates Rich Legacy

Seattle is gearing up to celebrate Black History Month in a big way with the "Call to Conscience" Black History Month Museum at the Columbia City Theater. Throughout February 2025, this immersive museum will showcase installations, exhibits, and activities that honor the  achievements and resilience of Seattle's Black community.

Exploring Seattle's Black History

The museum offers a deep dive into the rich tapestry of Black history in Seattle. Exhibits include:

  • Seattle Black Firefighters (SBFFA): Learn about the contributions of Black firefighters in Seattle through historical photos, documents, and firefighting equipment.

  • Seattle Black Panther Party: Discover the legacy of the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party, the first established outside California.

  • Hartsfield Enslaved Quilt Collection: Explore the history of quilting as a form of communication and resistance among enslaved African Americans.

  • Africa to America Post Enslavement: This exhibit highlights the connections between African leaders and Black American activists, as well as the experiences of African immigrants in Washington State.

  • Seattle Black Elected Officials: Learn about the Black leaders who have shaped Seattle's history and policies.

  • Rainier Cinema Vintage Black Movie Poster Collection: Explore the evolution of Black cinema through vintage movie posters.

  • History of Seattle Black Churches: Discover the social and political contributions of Black churches in Seattle.

  • History of Blacks in the Seattle Public Schools Metro League: Learn about the role of Black athletes and coaches in Seattle's Metro League.

  • "T" Heards Tacoma: Explore the history of Tacoma through the eyes of long-time resident Tony Heard.

A Month of Celebration

The "Call to Conscience" Black History Month Museum opens its doors on February 1st with a special opening ceremony at 10 am, followed by tours starting at 11 am. The museum will remain open throughout February, offering a unique opportunity to learn, reflect, and celebrate Black history in Seattle.
