From Athlete to Artist: Fresco Lee Talks Growth, Influences, and What's Next
By Emma Schwichtenberg
Fresco Lee was an athlete first and foremost. While growing up, people often remarked on his talent for rapping, but his focus was primarily on sports. At 18, on his way to a studio session at the Southwest Community Center, he was shot in the leg. The injury forced him to set aside basketball and pick up the pen. From that turning point, he committed himself fully to mastering his craft, determined to make every performance and opportunity a testament to his growth as an artist.
Lee spoke with Converge Music about his start, Time Will Tell EP, key influences, and his upcoming projects.
Can you tell us about your 2022 EP, Time Will Tell?
That was my first official project. It was important for me to introduce who I am and what I can do as an artist. I kept it concise, just enough to give listeners a glimpse of my potential. It’s called Time Will Tell because I believe it’s only a matter of time before everything really starts coming together for me.
Who are some local artists that have impacted you?
For me, the most influential artists have been Huey P, who I consider the best spitter in the region. He showed me the ropes and introduced me to the scene, even getting me into major shows with artists like Nipsey Hussle, Young Thug, and T.I. My blood cousin Key Nyata has also been a huge inspiration; it’s been incredible to watch everything he’s accomplished so far. Donte Peace is another artist I respect for his conscious lyricism, and LROC, a distant cousin, stands out as a true hustler and one of the best rappers in Tacoma, especially for his age group. I’ve also followed Lewie’s entire rise, and it’s been dope to see the growth and quality of his music. Other artists I respect include 2ooPaid, Jake One (who I’d love to collaborate with), Mike Jack, Mafi D, Stuey Newton, and Dave B. There are so many more, but these are the ones I really vibe with the most.
What do you do outside of music?
I work at least four days a week, and I’m trying to get back in the gym more since that’s where I started. I love to hoop and work out. I’m always learning something new, whether it’s video editing, animal facts, history, or building projects. Apart from that, I focus on taking care of my kids and just relaxing.
What is your songwriting process like?
I write everything, but I don’t have a set schedule for it. I like to take my time and never force it. I let the beat guide me. Sometimes, I go through 2-5 beats for one song until I find the perfect fit. The writing process can take 30 minutes or stretch out over days or weeks, depending on how the beat speaks to me and how it meshes once I record it.
Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?
I’m really excited about this collaboration, so shoutout to Cuddy for the opportunity! I’ll be on Fresh Juice Media/Podcast on October 9th. My next EP, Good Hope Sell Itself, is coming soon (release date TBA). In the meantime, I’m working on visuals and planning to collaborate with local videographers like GhostBoi and Town Ent. I’ll also be appearing on media platforms like The Slept On Podcast, The Legendary Dope Show, and OnTheAve to promote the EP.
Additionally, I’ve been building my own platform, For Spitters Only (@forspittersonly), for over a year now. I’m looking forward to collaborating with local and national artists and growing this platform into a powerhouse for the city. It’s something that’s much needed.
