The 9th annual Jackson Street Jazz Walk (JSJW) commenced on Friday, September 9th, 2022, with a Black and White Gala at the Central Area Senior Center.  The gala brought in residents throughout the Central District community, featuring live music from the award-winning singer and songwriter Eugenia Jones, as well as from the E. Pruitt & Maureese Itson Quartet.

The vibe of the evening was energetic and atmospheric, filled with dancing, refreshments, and cocktails.  The back patio overlooked a near-full moon in its splendor, highlighting Lake Washington and the surrounding nature.  A painter was invited to the show, who crafted a colorful representation of what was heard and felt amid the gala’s musical numbers.  A contest was held at the end of the evening, the winner being gifted the painter’s finish product.

The gala conveyed an overarching sentiment not only toward the residents of the community, but also toward the rich jazz history that is infused with the Central District – and country as a whole.  Legends of the craft, including Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Ernestine Anderson honed their craft and called Seattle home, and have since paved the way for a multitude of talented artists and musicians throughout the community.

The evening served as a propelling force and segue into the jazz festivities that would continue throughout the Central District over the weekend.
