Photography has been one of the biggest and most consistent presences in my life. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a visual storyteller—to make photographs that could transport the viewer or evoke emotion. Flash-forward to college, where I majored in documentary photography. Since then, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to create photographs that tell a story, but I had yet to do so in a journalistic sense—which left quite a gap for me, as photojournalism was the first genre of photography to touch my heart and inspire me to pick up a camera. That changed today when I rolled up to the Converge’s Black Media Matters studio to fill in as the stills photographer for the Morning Update Show.

I’m no stranger to creating photographs in fast-paced environments, but there was something different about being on set for the Morning Update Show and being trusted to help document it. Inside the Converge studio, working alongside the crew, I felt confident, empowered, and that what I was doing mattered. It’s just in the air, there. Looking at the history displayed on the interview wall, and watching history unfold right in front of it was inspiring—and being entrusted to photograph it was immensely humbling. Thank you again, Omari and Traeanna, for the opportunity. And thank you to the crew for your amazing hospitality. Black Media Matters and it feels so good to be a part of it.
