Nurturing Roots builds and heals community through farming and relationships
Since 2016, Nurturing Roots has been working to build community through farming and healing through relationships. The community farming program focuses on creating healthy eating habits and educating individuals about the ways food can impact their lives. Their focus is on sharing the truth around systematic oppression and its relationship to food and environmental justice.
Trae Holiday visited their headquarters in Beacon Hill to produce this film about the work the organization is doing and hear about their community impacts. Our latest short film, the first to be fully produced and directed by Holiday, features a look at Nurturing Roots and the individuals who power it.
“When I think about what Nurturing Roots does for the community, I think of my son,” Volunteer Eula Scott said. “It’s not just a place of resistance, but of growth too. He can come take a class, do an art project, see animals, and have an understanding of the earth.”
The space is filled with art, history and education. An experience at Nurturing Roots is well-rounded and grounded in the idea that knowing and establishing roots, both physical and emotional, is critical to community development.
“There’s so much history here,” Youth Programmer at Nuturing Roots Taylor Tinsley said. “There’s so much energy of wanting to do more for community and wanting to connect with people.”
