Strength in Design: Allie Spurlock's Inspiring Creation for Seattle Kraken’s Women in Hockey Night
Last month, Bel Garcia and Mathew Bermudez of Drip Media attended Seattle Kraken’s Women in Hockey Night as the spotlight shined brightly on Allie Spurlock, a talented artist whose unique jersey design embodies the resilience and tenacity of women in sports and beyond.
Bel caught up with Allie and shared the story behind her captivating creation, drawing inspiration from her life experiences and the rugged beauty of Alaska's commercial fishing industry. "It's really based on my life and Alaska commercial fishing species," Allie explains. "Salmon and herring are the two main species that come to spawn and reproduce in Sitka, the struggles that they go through like the female species, are fighting really hard."
As she elaborates on her design, Allie points out subtle yet powerful details: the anchor adorned with crab claws symbolizes strength, and the scales on the back represent the nautical essence of her artwork. "I make my art out of washed-up fishing gear," she adds, highlighting her commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
For Allie, being chosen to design the jersey for Women in Hockey Night is a profound honor and a testament to the resilience of women everywhere. "I feel so honored to be chosen," she expresses. "I feel so honored to be growing up in the Northwest, living in Alaska here, representing all of these strong women today, and I'm just so glad to be a part of it."
As her design graces the walls of Climate Pledge Arena, Allie's artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and spirit of women in hockey and beyond.
