Trae Holiday was joined by Beyond The Curls Founder and CEO Sally Wusstig-Trice on The Day With Trae. They talked about embracing the beauty of curls and how Wusstig-Trice has been working to bring awareness the the things we put in and use on our bodies.

Growing up in Florida, Wusstig-Trice says she was taught by her mother to straighten her curls using a hot comb, a practice which she continued into adulthood even when she moved to Seattle.

“I got tired of straightening my hair for three hours and then having it get rained on, so I embraced my curls,” Wusstig-Trice said. “Then I tried 20 or 30 products and never found anything that really worked, so I decided to make my own. I decided to do my own research and make my own decisions about what ingredients I want to put in my body, and Beyond the Curls commenced.”

The first two products she created her hair butter and growth oil, and Wusstig-Trice has continued to expand her line since. She has used her business minor to help her make sense of the product world, and has big plans to grow further.

“I wanted to come out of the gate store ready,” Wusstig-Trice said. “I may not know exactly what I'm doing all the time, but I'm gonna look the part.”

She says that her passion to create clean and healthy beauty products comes from a life-long fixation on being healthy.

“I’ve always been health-conscious,” Wusstig-Trice said. “Just look at what you’re putting into your body. Cosmetics alone, there's like 75 toxic ingredients that people put on every single day with makeup, hair products, even the detergent that you wear is 95% water, but there’s also chemicals as well.”

Her motivation has only increased since having a daughter, and she says that her push to create healthier beauty products is partially inspired by her.

“I want to live long enough to see my daughter get married, if she wants to, or to see her do whatever she wants to do,” Wusstig-Trice said. “I just want to live long enough and be able to experience life.”

Wusstig-Trice continues to build a following and says she’s astonished at how many people like her products.
