Seattle Artists Honor Late Community Leader Elijah Lewis
Last week, members of Seattle’s art community including Vivid Matter Collective gathered at the Black Lives Matter Mural on Capitol Hill for their annual letter repainting as well as creating second installation honoring the life of Elijah Lewis.
The event featured artists painting murals in his honor as well as a children’s station run by Elijah’s mother Janine Lewis with art materials and canvases.
“We wanted to make this year extra special and bring Elijah’s memory into it,” Takiyah Ward said.
Ward says repainting the Black Live Matter mural allows the community to reflect on the experiences from the previous year and honor the legacies of those who have made a difference.
“Losing Elijah sent a ripple effect through the entire city, and especially our community,” Ward said. “I remember the day that I got that news I knew that I was going to do something like this to speak to his name.”
It was a meaningful event for many and brought the community together in celebration of Lewis’s light and legacy.
