The Seattle City Council announced today that the application window for the vacant District 2 council position is now open. Interested candidates residing in District 2, representing southeast Seattle, can apply until 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

To be considered, applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, and completed financial interest statement form to the City Clerk via email at councilvacancy@seattle.gov. Additionally, applicants must meet specific requirements outlined by state law and the Seattle City Charter, including being a U.S. citizen, a qualified voter of Washington State, able to read and write English, and an active registered voter of District 2 for at least 120 days before filing their candidacy.

Community Group Participation

The City encourages community groups to participate in the selection process. Groups can provide general feedback on the public forum's structure, candidate questions, and accessibility considerations by completing a form on the City Clerk's website. Additionally, community organizations can express interest in hosting the public forum by emailing a letter of interest to councilvacancy@seattle.gov by January 9.

Background and Next Steps

The City Charter mandates that the Council fill a vacant position within 20 calendar days. This period begins on January 7, following former Councilmember Tammy J. Morales' official resignation on January 6, and ends on January 27. A tentative public forum for community members to hear from the candidates is scheduled for January 21. The final selection will occur during a Special City Council meeting on January 27, where a successful candidate will be appointed with a simple majority of at least five votes.
