Seattle Theatre Group's Commitment to Youth Development and Community Engagement
This week on a special 100 Days of Action episode of The Day with Trae, host Trae Holiday welcomed, Marisol Sanchez-Best, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the Seattle Theatre Group (STG), who discussed the organization's dedication to providing opportunities for young people through arts-based programming. STG's youth programs aim to offer safe spaces, mentorship, and personal and professional development opportunities to historically excluded communities.
Sanchez-Best emphasized the importance of cultural relevance in STG's programs, stating, "It's hard to make those connections when there is no connection, that there's no understanding of what life is like." To ensure that their programs are truly impactful, STG actively seeks out instructors and mentors who reflect the communities they serve. "We want to ensure that students are feeling seen and that they feel they belong in our program," Sanchez-Best explained.
STG's approach to finding the right instructors involves a relational approach rather than relying solely on traditional job postings. Sanchez-Best shared, "A lot of the times our community members that we want to work with don't know that there is work opportunity." STG actively reaches out to community members and organizations to identify potential candidates who have the "heart and the soul" to work with young people.
Holiday commended STG's efforts to build a strong and culturally relevant instructor base, recognizing the importance of having the right people on the front lines working directly with youth. He expressed his appreciation for STG's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and cultural understanding within their programs.
Sanchez-Best also highlighted STG's vision of inclusivity, stating, "All are welcome, all are represented." This vision extends beyond their physical venue spaces and into the schools and communities they serve. STG's programs aim to empower young people and provide them with positive outlets for self-expression and personal growth.
For those interested in getting involved with STG's youth programs, Sanchez-Best encouraged them to visit the STG website, stgpresents.org, and explore the different categories and resources available. STG welcomes individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people and who share their commitment to arts education and community engagement.
