The Hair Whisperer of South Seattle: Zue Sawtell's Story

#SupportBlackBusiness

In a recent interview on The Day With Trae, Zue Sawtell, the owner of Defined Salon in South Seattle, shared her inspiring journey in the hair industry and her passion for community. With nearly 20 years of experience, Zue's story is one of dedication, creativity, and a deep understanding of the importance of hair as a part of our identity.

Early Inspiration and a Lifelong Passion

Zue's passion for hair began long before she became a salon owner. "I was first inspired by hair just on the front stoop. I would braid hair on the stairs of my middle school," she recalled. This early passion led her to pursue a professional career, and at 18, she obtained her license and began her journey.

For Zue, hair is more than just a style; it's a powerful form of self-expression and identity. "Hair is just really important to me. It's a part of our visual identity and how the world sees us," she explained. So now, at this point in my journey, I'm excited to help people find their identity through their hair, which sometimes changes weekly."

Building a Business and a Community

Zue's commitment to her craft and her community is evident in everything she does. Defined Salon, which she opened in 2016, is more than just a place to get your hair done. "I call it a gathering space," Zue said. "So, being able to have a space where people can come in and find community, especially for some people who are new to the area, they may not have found their church. One thing they do before they touch is they find their doctor and their hairstyle."

Zue emphasizes the importance of Black-owned businesses in the community. "Black Business is essential to our community," she stated. "It's important to find Black business because they understand you, they support you, and because we are more diverse and spread out as far as our locations. Now, Black businesses are some of the things that ground us, bring us together."

Navigating Hair Journeys and Offering Advice

With her extensive experience, Zue has guided many clients through their hair journeys. She believes in the power of consultation and understanding each individual's needs and lifestyle. "The consultation is how I usually approach people, to figure out what to do with their hair and help them navigate discussing what their texture is," she explained.

Zue also offered five essential tips for hair care:

  1. Find a good stylist you trust and visit them quarterly.

  2. Stay hydrated.

  3. Take multivitamins.

  4. Don't overwear extensions and get them switched out every six weeks.

  5. Wash and condition hair regularly for scalp health.

Reign of Style Hair Competition

Zue is also excited about the upcoming Reign of Style hair competition, an annual event that showcases the creativity and talent of Seattle's hairstylists. "One day a year, we get the opportunity to just let it be free, let it be creative. No functionality needed," she said. "Just let your creativity soar."

This year marks the 11th annual Reign of Style, which will be held on March 2nd at the Seattle Center. Zue and her salon will be competing, and she encourages everyone to come out and support the event. "It's a great opportunity to find community as a hair stylist… and also just connect," she added.
