The Importance of Water Safety and Swim Equity: A Conversation with Loria Yeadon

In a recent interview on The Day with Trae, Loria Yeadon, a representative from the YMCA of Greater Seattle, discussed the critical issue of water safety and swim equity, emphasizing the alarming statistics surrounding drowning, particularly among children of color. Black children ages one to 14 are five times more likely to drown than their Caucasian counterparts, and this disparity increases to ten times for Black children between the ages of 11 and 12.

To combat this, the YMCA of Greater Seattle has partnered with the mayor's office and Parks and Recreation on the Swim Seattle initiative. This program aims to provide swim vouchers to young people and increase access to swim lessons throughout the region. Yeadon stressed the importance of addressing the shortage of lifeguards and swim resources, particularly in areas like South King County.

The conversation also highlighted the need to debunk myths surrounding water safety, such as the misconception that drowning only occurs in deep water. Yeadon shared her personal experience growing up in rural Virginia, where fear-based water safety education was prevalent due to a lack of swimming skills. She advocated for a community-wide approach to water safety that emphasizes education, respect for water, and the importance of adult supervision.

The YMCA plays a crucial role in water safety efforts by not only teaching children how to swim but also training and certifying lifeguards. Yeadon called for community involvement to address the lifeguard shortage and ensure that pools remain open and accessible to all.

For those looking to get involved, Yeadon provided several ways to support the cause. Donations, volunteering, and spreading awareness about water safety resources are all essential to making a difference. By working together, we can ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn how to swim and enjoy the water safely.
