Yoga + Basketball - Rise Above and I’m Built Different Team Up to Host Free Clinic

“It’s so important to be in the life of young people,” legendary Sonics coach Lenny Wilkens said. “They’re the future. They’re tomorrows doctors and lawyers and politicians and we have to let them know that they make a difference and that they can achieve.”

I’m Built Different partnered with Rise Above to host a free yoga and basketball clinic for youth at the University of Washington’s Marv Harshman Gym featuring Wilkens and other guest coaches. The clinic was free and hosted by former NBA player and yoga instructor Bobby Jones.

“I’m trying to introduce yoga practices and mindfulness practices to youth at early ages,” Jones, who is the founder of I’m Built Different said.”

Coaches included UW volleyball player Emoni Bush, Sonics legend Lenny Wilkens, Olympic Gold Medal Winner Carla McGhee and Pro Basketball Player Lakota Beatty. The event featured both yoga and basketball instruction, as well as educational sessions, snacks and more.

“I think it’s just another way to reach kids,” Rise Above Founder and CEO Jaci McCormack said. “It’s a healthy outlet for them as we talk about some of the mental health issues that we’re dealing with post-covid.”

There was a variety of different activities for the youth present, including a yoga workshop, basketball drills, a panel and more.

“Building this awareness of their minds and bodies really helps them tap in to the power of being present in the moment and the awareness of self,” James Mayfield El, who is a master REBAR trainer, said.

UW Volleyball player and Rise Above ambassador Emoni Bush agreed, saying she’s grateful for the chance to impact the lives of youth.

“It’s important for me to give back,” Bush said. “It’s so important to be the role model that these children are looking for.”
