Besa Gordon, host of Back2Besa, gave FOX 13’s Good Day Seattle viewers a sneak peek of this weekend's episode, which will feature YOUniversal Fitness's Man Uplift program. This Tacoma-based program combines physical fitness with mental health, recognizing that strength isn't just about muscles.  

As Besa explained to Good Day Seattle host Erin Mayovsky, Man Uplift redefines what it means to be strong. "It's actually changing these men's lives in other ways than just getting strong and buff, like it's actually changing their lives, mentally, but in the best way, and it's also building up their relationships at home," Besa shared. Participants engage in a monthly workout followed by a guided discussion with a therapist, fostering a safe space for men to open up about their emotions and challenges. This unique approach not only improves physical health but also strengthens relationships and emotional well-being.  

Besa emphasized the importance of addressing mental health alongside physical fitness. “This program allows these men to have that workout, to kind of relax a little bit, but also have that conversation and realize it's okay to have feelings. It's okay to talk about your feelings,” she remarked. By carving out time for both, men can achieve a more holistic sense of well-being. The Man Uplift program offers a supportive community where men can connect, share their experiences, and realize they're not alone in their struggles.  

Erin Mayovsky, the host of Good Day Seattle, was impressed with the program, stating, "That looks like a pretty cool program, inspiring, and it seems like it should be for all, women, and men."

The Griot Party’s Seeds to Garden Project Resource Fair and Talent Youth Talent Showcase showed the power of youth and community collaboration. This event, a partnership between the Griot Party Experience, Pierce County Human Services, Berkeley 25, and the local community, aimed to provide a platform for young talents to shine while addressing the challenges faced by today's youth.

The event featured a diverse range of talented young performers, including dancers, singers, rappers, and visual artists. These artists, selected through auditions, shared their unique styles and voices, captivating the audience and demonstrating the transformative power of the arts.

Beyond the performances, the Griot Party and Seeds to Garden Resource Fair offered a wealth of resources, information, and school supplies for K-12 students, reflecting a commitment to holistic youth development. Gordon expressed her excitement about the conference, highlighting its "Ignite and Inspire" theme and the wealth of resources available to attendees, from workshops to one-on-one mentoring. Mayor Bruce Harrell and other city officials emphasized the importance of access to capital for Black businesses.

Seattle Parks and Recreation's Big Day of Play, a free event in Southeast Seattle, celebrated diversity, community, and recreation. It showcased the services offered by Seattle Parks and provided a platform for residents to connect with staff and each other.

Deputy Director Lakema Bell highlighted the event as the "most diverse special event" the department offers, intentionally located in one of Seattle's most diverse neighborhoods. Environmental Engagement Director Chukundi Salisbury emphasized the event's role in showcasing the breadth of Parks and Recreation's offerings.

Community Engagement Coordinator Deja'Nay Gilliam emphasized the interactive nature of the event, with vendors and organizations offering engaging activities rather than just providing information. The event brought joy to attendees, especially children, and strengthened community connections.

Food, Fitness, and Careers Exploration Coordinator Samuel Chesneau found the most rewarding aspect was the positive impact on attendees and colleagues. The event catered to all ages and abilities, offering over 60 booths with activities, live performances, and a block party, making it a day of fun and recreation for everyone.

The Black Equality Coalition (BEC) is working to make a difference in the lives of students at Panther Lake Elementary School. Through the Unstoppable Coaching program, BEC mentors are working with students to build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of community.

The program was created by Anthony Curtis, who was inspired by his own experiences growing up. "It was very important for me to think about what I didn't have and start to create that for the kids of this generation," Curtis said. The program is based on the idea that all children are "unstoppable" and have the potential to achieve great things.

BEC mentors work with students in a variety of ways, including one-on-one mentoring, group workshops, and community events. They also partner with teachers and staff to create a supportive and inclusive school environment.

L'Taii Mathews, a BEC mentor, described the program as "a gift and my love letter to Panther Lake and its students." She encourages educators to "come into the classroom setting with us...and vibe with their students on a totally different level."

The program has had a positive impact on students at Panther Lake. Students are more engaged in school, their grades have improved, and they have developed stronger relationships with their peers and adults.

"What I love about the kids that are going to your program," said Andrea Craviato, Panther Lake staff member, "is that they're excited. They're wanting to be leaders."

Alex Guzman, a BEC mentor, shared that he "started to really learn more about community and the black community, and understanding the struggles and understanding what people really go through."

The BEC also facilitates partnerships with community members to further enrich the students' experiences. Recently, local rapper Mafi D visited the school and helped the kids write a song. Bailey Vilalobos, a BEC member, noted the impact of having Mafi D work with the students. "When they have a figure like Mafi D Come in, it kind of helps them harness that energy," Vilalobos said. "That's something they're gonna remember."

Curtis expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with Mafi D, calling him "one of my community heroes." He added, "It takes a village." The BEC is making a real difference in the lives of students at Panther Lake Elementary School. The Unstoppable Coaching program is helping students to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and in life.

Champ Boxing, a Seattle-based non-profit organization, is making a real difference in the lives of young people. Founded by Kevin Loyal in an abandoned classroom at Rainier Beach High School, Champ Boxing provides free boxing training and mentorship to youth in the community.

The program focuses on teaching important life skills such as discipline, integrity, and perseverance. It also provides opportunities for young people to travel and compete in boxing tournaments across the country.

Champ Boxing has achieved remarkable success, with its students winning national championships and even Olympic qualifiers. But the organization's impact goes far beyond the boxing ring. Champ Boxing has helped young people from all walks of life, including those facing challenges such as poverty, violence, and disability.

One of the most inspiring stories is that of a young man who came to Champ Boxing after being shot seven times. He was told he would never walk or use his right arm again, but through the program's support and his own determination, he not only relearned to walk but also won his first boxing match by knockout.

Founder Kevin Loyal describes Champ Boxing's mission, saying, "We want to make sure that the champions not just in our boxing facility, but in our community."  He emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for young people to experience life beyond their current circumstances: "Some kids don't know what life has to offer them because they haven't experienced it. So we pride ourselves like you want to go to Canada, we're going to raise the money and take you to Canada."

Chef Trey's love for Caribbean food was sparked by visits to family on the East Coast and in the Caribbean. Recognizing the lack of authentic Caribbean representation in Seattle, he started a food truck, eventually leading to the opening of Jerk Shack in the Central District.

"The heart of CD is where I was raised," Chef Trey explained. "I grew up on 32nd and Cherry was raised here, went to Garfield High School. I have deep roots here, in this community, in this neighborhood, so it means a lot. Means everything."

While many customers come to Jerk Shack expecting traditional Caribbean dishes like oxtail and curry goat, Chef Trey's menu offers a unique twist.

"We want to try to bring Caribbean flavors that are recognizable to our culture that is here and as well as bringing the flavor profiles that is familiar with our community and us and still not compromising the flavor profiles of Caribbean food," he said.

This innovative approach has garnered praise from both locals and visitors, solidifying Jerk Shack's place as a must-visit Seattle eatery.

For Chef Trey, Jerk Shack is a way to connect with his community and share his passion for food.

"Everything on that menu you can't go wrong with," he proudly stated. "A lot of people come to Jerk Shack looking for traditional Caribbean fare like oxtail or curry goat or something like that. We only do those dishes as a special."

The Facts Newspaper, a cornerstone of Seattle's Black community, has been in publication since the 1960s. Founded by Fitzgerald Beaver, The Facts was created to fill the gap left by the daily paper and to center the Black experience in Seattle.

The paper has been a family affair since its inception. Marla Beaver, Fitzgerald's daughter, has been involved with the paper since she was young, acting as a runner and taking on various responsibilities as she grew up. She emphasizes the paper's role as a community hub, providing opportunities for aspiring journalists and fostering trust within the community. "He gave people a chance," Marla says of her father. "He was just that real."

Chardonnay Beaver, Fitzgerald's granddaughter, is now a storyteller, speaker, and writer at The Facts. She recognizes the paper's significance in bridging communities and maintaining relevance in the age of disinformation. The Facts continues to be a trusted source of information, connecting with a wide range of people from single mothers to politicians.

Chardonnay reflects on the paper's enduring legacy, "For us to still be relevant is because of that trust." She also highlights the importance of understanding one's values and serving the community, a lesson passed down from her grandfather. "It's not value in profit, it's not value in performance," she says. "There's value in people who are you trying to serve? What's your vision?"

The enduring legacy of The Facts is a testament to the Beaver family's dedication and the unwavering support of the Seattle community. As a trusted source of information and a platform for aspiring journalists, The Facts continues to play a vital role in Seattle's Black community.
