Terrain 16: Besa Gordon’s Day One Recap – A Whole Vibe in Spokane

By Besa Gordon: Terrain never disappoints, and this year was no different! Day one of Terrain 16 kicked off with a preview night full of energy, art, and community. If you’ve never been, trust me, you want to hit both days. With so many performances, installations, and artists in the mix, there’s no way to take it all in at once.

Before we even got to the show, I had to make my usual stops. The road trip to Spokane always calls for a quick photo moment in Vantage to soak in the views. Once we settled into the Airbnb, it was time to switch gears and get ready for opening night. And this year, I had some extra excitement because our producer Mead Gill came along. It was actually his very first time in Spokane.

Connecting with Artists

Day one was all about diving into the heart of the festival and connecting with the incredible creatives who bring Terrain to life. I got to catch up with Ginger Ewing, who is always such a force behind the event, and also sat down with a lineup of talented artists:

  • Reinaldo Gil Zambrano,

  • WolfBat

  • Carl Richardson

  • Nani Soto

  • Mya Patrick

Each of them shared not only what inspires their art but also why being part of Terrain matters to them. And that is one of the things I love most. This festival is not just about hanging paintings on a wall.

More Than Just Art on the Walls

Terrain is every kind of art you can imagine under one roof. You have sculptures that stop you in your tracks. Live music, poetry, and even rap performances. Films and readings that open your mind. Artists creating live right in front of you.

It is the kind of event where you walk in thinking you will just check out some artwork, but end up dancing, listening to live music, or even stumbling into a poetry reading that leaves you inspired. Terrain really is a whole mood.

And that was just day one! Stick around because day two always brings another layer of surprises and performances.
