The 2025 Black Equity Ball: A Celebration of Homeownership, Community, and Legacy

The 2025 Black Equity Ball was more than just a gala—it was a powerful celebration of Black homeownership, financial empowerment, and community support. Held at the Four Points by Sheraton, the sold-out event marked its third annual gathering, reinforcing its growing impact in the Pacific Northwest.

This year’s event was hosted by Besa Gordon, the dynamic host of Back2Besa, who led the evening’s festivities, bringing energy and connection to the stage. The night was filled with inspiring moments, meaningful conversations, and a shared commitment to increasing Black homeownership.

A Sold-Out Evening of Inspiration and Networking

With a packed room of aspiring and current Black homeowners, real estate professionals, lenders, and community leaders, the Black Equity Ball created a space where networking, education, and celebration came together.

"This is our third annual Black Equity Ball, a formal red carpet event celebrating Black homeowners," said Anzhane Slaughter, CEO and Founder of Young Black Homeowners. "We have existing homeowners, aspiring homeowners, lenders, real estate professionals, nonprofit professionals—everyone who is mission-aligned with seeing more Black homeownership."

For many attendees, the event wasn’t just about homeownership—it was about building a supportive network. Tosh, an aspiring homeowner, shared, "I tell people to get in community with those who inspire them or are supportive. Having a strong circle makes it easier to talk about your goals and build a safe space to be vulnerable about what you need."

Empowering the Community Through Homeownership

A major theme of the evening was how homeownership is a critical step in closing the racial wealth gap and creating generational wealth. Jenefeness Franke, a financial therapist with Fiscal Finesse Consulting, emphasized the importance of financial literacy and ownership, stating:

"Owning a home is the path to wealth. That’s how we shrink the racial wealth gap and build generational wealth."

Especially in the Pacific Northwest, where Black homeownership rates have historically been lower, events like the Black Equity Ball are crucial in providing resources, fostering connections, and inspiring action.

Said Mohamed, Event Coordinator at Events by Sai, highlighted the impact of the event, saying, "This is so important because it provides a positive outlook on African American homeownership. It also inspires young people, showing them that it's never too soon to buy a home."

Addressing Barriers and Expanding Opportunities

The evening also recognized the challenges that Black homebuyers face, including historical displacement, financial barriers, and systemic inequities. Anzhane Slaughter spoke about the Home Covenant Act in Washington State and various down payment assistance programs, which are helping to make homeownership more accessible:

"Right now is a better opportunity than ever to become a homeowner. There are so many down payment assistance programs bridging the gap between what people qualify for and what they need to buy."

For those still navigating their path to homeownership, Elisha Michelle, an aspiring homeowner, encouraged attendees to take advantage of available resources: "Washington state has a lot of programs—use them! If you see a realtor online, ask questions. Don’t be afraid to reach out and get the information you need."

More Than an Event—A Movement

The 2025 Black Equity Ball was not just a celebration—it was a movement toward greater representation, financial empowerment, and community building. It showcased the resilience and determination of Black homeowners and those working toward that goal, providing them with the resources, connections, and motivation to take the next step.

From the red carpet to the stage, the event embodied excellence, education, and empowerment—and its impact will continue to grow in the years to come.
