On March 8–9, 2025, Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) makes its highly anticipated return to The Paramount Theatre in Seattle with a thrilling lineup of performances, including the world premiere of The Cookout—a bold new work by Robert Garland, DTH’s visionary artistic director.
Blending classical ballet with the rhythms of Black social dance, The Cookout is a dynamic reflection on resilience, culture, and joy. Presented in four movements, the piece moves through themes of labor, sorrow, and ultimately, communal celebration. Accompanied by a powerful playlist featuring music by Jill Scott, Cymande, Caron Wheeler, and Brass Construction, this work channels the rich artistic and cultural legacy of Harlem.
An Unmissable Evening of Dance
Alongside The Cookout, the evening’s program showcases an exquisite mix of classic and contemporary pieces:
Donizetti Variations – A Balanchine masterpiece set to Gaetano Donizetti’s lively music
Take Me With You – A contemporary piece by Robert Bondara, set to the sounds of Radiohead
Blake Works IV (The Barre Project) – A stunning work by William Forsythe, featuring music by James Blake
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Performance
For over five decades, Dance Theatre of Harlem has been at the forefront of breaking barriers in classical ballet. With a deep commitment to artistic excellence and cultural representation, DTH performances resonate far beyond the stage.
Whether you're a ballet enthusiast or new to the world of dance, The Cookout promises to be an unforgettable experience—one that captures both the struggles and triumphs of the human spirit through movement, music, and storytelling.
