40 High School Students Take Flight With Alaska Airlines and UNCF

“This is the future of our country, the future of our communities.” - Alaska Airlines Captain Ron Limes.

Alaska Airlines and UNCF teamed up to begin a historic experience for 40 high school students from the Pacific Northwest. The students and their chaperones were flown to Atlanta aboard Alaska’s Our Commitment aircraft for a trip that will include visits to HBCUs around the Atlanta area.

The aircraft itself is painted Black and features Black students’ faces along with lettering designed by the late Adé Hogue. Hogue was the subject of our film Finding Go, which premiered last fall at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

“That plane is empowering,” High School student Nyilah Lewis said. “I’m really going to take advantage of this opportunity.”

HBCU Swingman Classic Brings Black Joy, HBCU Baseball to Seattle

"This is a family reunion.”

It was a historic day in the Emerald City as the first-ever Swingman Classic took over T-Mobile park on Friday and brought Seattle’s Black community to the stadium for a celebration of Black joy, baseball, and HBCUs. The game brought 50 of the best HBCU baseball players from around the country to Seattle to showcase their talents, while an HBCU college fair took place in the concourse.

“There’s such long lineage of great Black ball players. You really don’t wanna see the Black ball player disappear from MLB.”

A large section of the games audience was young people from across the community, as their horizons were expanded through the showcase of both the athletic and educational opportunities available to them around the country.

CD Panthers: The Marathon

Converge Media had the privilege of producing a short film to uplift and celebrate the life of D’Vonne Pickett Jr. and his impact on the CD Panthers. The CD Panthers football program provides the opportunity to play football to over 250 children in the community, and it was a program Pickett cared deeply about. He was head coach for the 6u team which his son plays for, and Converge Media followed their journey through practices and the championship game. This film was created as a gift to the family and the CD Panthers to memorialize the impact of Pickett, and played at the memorial for D’Vonne Pickett Jr. after a speech by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell.

Finding Go

Finding Go is a film documenting the life and legacy of Broderick Adé Hogue. An art director, designer, and letterer, Hogue’s influence was felt in many spheres across the country and even around the world. One of Hogue’s crowning achievements was creating the lettering for Our Commitment, a specially-designed 737 commissioned by Alaska Airlines in partnership with the United Negro College Fund to showcase their commitment to racial equality and education. By the time of Hogue’s death in the fall of 2021, he had impacted countless individuals through his presence and work. He is described as a true friend, an outgoing soul, and someone with an energy that made people want to be around him. This film chronicles his life from his early years in Asheville, NC, his college days at UNC Charlotte, and his eventual move to Chicago as his development into one of the best hand letterers of his generation.
