Art For The Community: Damon Brown steps into new mediums to create a lasting impact
Local artist Damon Brown continues to push himself creatively and impact his community through art. His latest project is centered around installations at the Odessa Brown Children’s Hospital Clinic at Othello. For this work, he moved out of his comfort zone and stepped into the world of sculpture, scaling his work into what he hopes will be a monument for the community.
“This is something that's going to be part of a building which will last for 30 or 50 years,” Brown said. “So I think the impact that it has on my community, or any community, is huge because now it has the ability to be a center of attraction.”
A two-dimensional visual artist by trade, Brown says the step into the world of three dimensions has been enlightening and challenging. His journey towards sculpture started at a city-led public art bootcamp, and he felt called to create in the medium. He offers advice to anyone looking to make a similar jump.
“Just go on the journey,” Brown said. “If it's something you're interested in or don't know much about, just check it out.”
That mentality served him well as he explored new routes to express his creativity, winding up with the art now on display at and on the hospital.
“I think for me, when I was given the opportunity to move into this space, I really didn't know what to expect,” Brown said. “I think what was exciting for me was just the opportunity. And I think it has been meaningful to use the magnitude of the scale of these projects to create something lasting.”
