Belize: A Journey of Sisterhood, Art, and Culture

A few years ago, Takiyah "TDub" Ward aka the Art Queen of Converge, embarked on an incredible journey to Belize with her Converge Media family. This unforgettable experience opened her eyes to the power of art, culture, and sisterhood. From the moment they landed, the energy was electric. Belize, a country bursting with life, captivated Takiyah with its vibrant mix of Maya, Mestizo, Creole, and Garifuna cultures and its breathtaking natural beauty.

Sharing this adventure with her fellow Queens of Converge, Besa Gordon, TraeAnna Holiday, and Juila Jessie made it even more special. They explored ancient Maya cities, hiked through lush rainforests, and swam in crystal-clear waters. Along the way, they supported and uplifted each other, sharing their unique perspectives and talents. Base's infectious energy kept everyone laughing, TraeAnna”s passion for social justice inspired them, and Julia's wisdom and experience guided them. Together, they formed a powerful sisterhood that made the journey even more meaningful.

They spent a day soaking up the Garifuna culture on Kalipuna Island, preparing a family meal together, dancing, and celebrating the beauty of the Garifuna people. Their afternoon at the Sabal Cassava factory showed Takiyah firsthand how natural resources can birth a nation. She was spellbound by the warmth of these ancestral connections they were honored to make. It's heartwarming that even when you march to the beat of your own drum together, music is made.

One of the highlights of the trip was meeting the legendary artist Penn Cayetano. His studio, a treasure trove of colorful paintings, sculptures, and musical instruments, tells a story of the Garifuna culture. Penn taught Takiyah so much about the power of art to connect people, bridge cultures, and celebrate the beauty of the human experience. He inspired her to use her own art as a platform for positive change.

Takiyah's trip to Belize was a life-changing experience that taught her the importance of embracing different cultures, appreciating the beauty of nature, and using art as a tool for preserving history. She is grateful to the Belize Tourism Board and Alaska Airlines for getting them there and showing them an amazing time, and to her Converge Media family for making this journey possible. She will cherish these memories they created together forever.
