Besa Gordon’s Night at the Opera: Jubilee's Captivating Performance

Photos taken by Besa Gordon

Written by Besa Gordon - After seeing my good sis, Trae Holiday, do a special on Jubilee and interview some of the cast members, I just knew I had to experience its greatness in person. And let me tell you, Jubilee at the Seattle Opera was a whole shmood.

On a Saturday night, when many people were out enjoying dinner or getting ready for a night on the town, I chose to spend my evening at McCaw Hall, immersed in the world of Jubilee. The singing was absolutely captivating. It's the kind of soul-stirring music that's hard to describe in words. You simply have to hear it for yourself to understand the power and emotion behind it.

After the show, I had the pleasure of meeting the talented Aundi Marie Moore, who played the role of Maggie Porter, and even ran into with my girl Darchelle Burnett, whose face graces the Jubilee promo photos.

As director Tazewell Thompson noted, "Jubilee is a story that resonates with people from all backgrounds. It's a celebration of resilience, cultural heritage, and the enduring power of music." Which is why it was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life coming together to enjoy this powerful performance.

If you haven’t gone yet, I recommend grabbing a ticket to see Jubilee for yourself before October 26th, which is the last day to see it at McCaw Hall. And what’s great is that you don't have to be an opera aficionado or even familiar with the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers to appreciate the production.

Jubilee is playing at McCaw Hall until October 26th and you can get tickets by visiting SeattleOpera.org
