Building Community: Beacon Pacific Village's Innovative Approach to Housing in Seattle

Beacon Pacific Village, a new affordable housing development in Seattle's Beacon Hill / International District neighborhood, is more than just a place to live. It's a community development project that aims to serve families in every way possible.

In a recent interview, Josh Sellers, Director of Real Estate at the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda), spoke about the vision behind the project. "This building is really, you know, we described it as a community development project, and it's going to serve families in every way possible," Sellers said.

The building includes a mix of affordable housing units, a childcare facility, and an elder care center. It was designed to meet the needs of the diverse and growing community in the International District.

"A lot of the families that we serve in the International District and that call the International District home often come from immigrant or refugee kind of backgrounds, and so they're often intergenerational," Sellers explained. "So they'll be living with grandparents or aunties and uncles, and we want to make sure that they're able to maintain their family unit as they land here and as they grow here because that's really key to their success here in this in a new place."

The building also features several amenities designed to foster a sense of community, including extended living rooms on each floor, workspaces, and community laundry rooms.

Sellers emphasized the importance of creating a space residents can proudly call home. "We want residents to feel like they've come home and this is a place that they can stay and and grow and invest, invest in, so that, yeah, the the neighborhood becomes stronger and and more eclectic and resilient and just a more interesting place to be."

Beacon Pacific Village exemplifies what can be achieved when public and private partners come together to invest in affordable housing and community development. It is a model for other communities across the country.
