Bumbershoot Announces Daily Lineups and New Artists

Today, Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Arts & Music Festival announces the highly anticipated daily lineups and reveals new musical acts who will join in celebrating Bumbershoot’s 50-year anniversary at the Seattle Center this September 2 & 3. Additionally, producers have shared impressive details about the successful launch of their Workforce Development Program, supporting future generations of music festival producers and industry experts.

Saturday will kick off the festival with stellar performances from Olympia’s Sleater-Kinney, a body-moving electronic set from globally known producer, Zhu, explosive punk and alternative rock from AFI, Grammy-Award Nominee and vocal powerhouse Brittany Howard, and Seattle hometown heroes Sunny Day Real Estate. Additional Saturday performances include Durand Jones, Matt and Kim, Ride, Jacob Banks, and more. Sunday will offer captivating performances from alt-rockers The Revivalists, post-hardcore band Jawbreaker, legendary UK producer Fatboy Slim, synth alt-pop from Phantogram, and Seattle’s own Band of Horses. Additional Sunday acts include Bomba Estereo, Uncle Waffles, A-Trak, Valerie June, and much more. Full daily line-up listed below.

Bumbershoot is also pleased to announce new additions to the already stacked lineup including feminist performance art rockers Pussy Riot, iconic producer Maya Jane Coles, indie-rock quartet Shannon and The Clams, and Seattle’s TV Star.

The reimagined Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival is a partnership between two organizations, non-profit Third Stone and festival producer New Rising Sun. In April, Third Stone launched the tuition-free Bumbershoot Workforce Development Program in partnership with The UC Theatre’s Concert Career Pathways program (CCP-X). This tuition-free, hands-on training program removes the barriers of entry into the live music business for young people 17 - 25-years-old from historically marginalized communities, supporting the next generation of music industry professionals and laying the groundwork for a more equitable and inclusive music industry. This six-month program focuses on teaching the behind-the-scenes aspects of concert promotion and production, combined with job-shadowing and paid internships, and culminating with jobs at the Bumbershoot Festival Labor Day weekend.

The inaugural Bumbershoot Workforce Development Program’s 16 participants began a series of workshops, speaker series, and shadow shifts, in partnership with music industry professionals and organizations in Third Stone's Professional Partner Network, including organizations like legendary Seattle venues, The Crocodile and The Triple Door, as well as TeenTix and learning marketable skills such as event production, sound engineering, marketing, talent buying, event budgeting, and more. Using a “festival as classroom” philosophy, Third Stone's vision for success is that in ten years, the festival will be managed by alumni of the program.

About Bumbershoot:

Established in 1971, Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Arts & Music Festival takes place over Labor Day weekend and stretches across the 74-acre Seattle Center beneath the city’s iconic Space Needle. The festival, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023 under new leadership of New Rising Sun (Joe Paganelli, Greg Lundgren and Steven Severin), is a celebration of the art, music, food, technology and the culture that permeates the Pacific Northwest. In a return to Bumbershoot’s origin, it is an embrace and elevation of art and community. The programming is built locally and managed by a team with deep roots in regional arts production, working in tandem with local non-profits, public schools and historically marginalized voices.

About Third Stone:

Third Stone’s mission is to foster an inclusive, energized, and sustainable arts economy in the Pacific Northwest through youth education, festival, spectacle, and community driven programming. Their primary purpose is to support the Bumbershoot brand by producing a main campus event on Labor Day that is equitably programmed, affordably priced, and accessible to all. Third Stone houses Bumbershoot’s workforce and education program, providing critical business skills to youths aged 17-25 using a “festival as classroom” philosophy. Inspired by, and collaborating with, the wildly successful Concert Career Pathways Education Program (CCP) from UC Theatre in Berkeley, CA, Third Stone's program focuses on serving youth from communities that have been marginalized. Third Stone also has a goal that at least 80% of the graduates will find employment after completing the Bumbershoot Workforce Development Program. By partnering with the UC Theatre and other local non- profits like Seattle Children’s Theatre, Friends of the Waterfront, The Vera Project, TeenTix, Climate Pledge Arena and more, Third Stone works collectively to build a more equitable and sustainable creative arts ecosystem.
