Central District Native and UW Football Cornerback Mishael Powell Inspires Youth at CD Panthers Football Practice

“You can do anything coming from the Central District.” - University of Washington Cornerback Mishael Powell.

Powell stopped by CD Panthers practice on Thursday to deliver words of wisdom to the players. Powell, a CD Panther alum and Central District native, is a starter on the UW football team which is currently ranked fifth in the country. He spoke to the youth about the importance of hard work, listening to their parents, and paying attention in school.

“You have strengths and weaknesses, and in order to work on your weaknesses you really have to work,” Powell said. “When it comes to weaknesses at school or anything like that you have to work at it.”

Powell also reminisced on his own time with the program, urging the kids to enjoy every moment and give each day their all.

“I came from here, and I met one of my best friends playing CD Panthers football,” Powell said. “When you get older, you’re going to remember these moments.”

For Powell, it was a full circle moment. He remembered speakers who came to practice when he was growing up and the profound impact they had on him.

“It’s a great opportunity for them - I remember when I was a kid Tony Wroten came and spoke to us one time. I think it’s a good cycle that’s being kept up,” Powell said. “It’s good for the kids to realize that they can make it from the CD Panthers and keep on going.”

The Huskies play tomorrow at 4 pm against Stanford as they look to continue their undefeated season.
