Chukundi Salisbury’s Vision for District 2

"I believe that we all have a responsibility to make our city a better place for everyone." - Chukundi Salisbury

By Omari Salisbury

In a city where community engagement and grassroots leadership are highly valued, Chukundi Salisbury emerges as a compelling figure vying for the vacant Seattle City Council District 2 seat. With a long history of public service and an intimate understanding of the district's needs, Salisbury's candidacy offers a refreshing perspective on local governance.

A Deep-Rooted Community Servant:

Salisbury's connection to Seattle runs deep. A 27-year city employee currently serving as a manager in Seattle Parks and Recreation's environmental sustainability education and engagement unit, Salisbury's commitment to the city is unquestionable. As a Brighton neighborhood resident for 27 years, a homeowner, and a dedicated spouse and parent, Salisbury embodies the values and experiences of District 2 residents.

Priorities for District 2:

Salisbury's platform centers around three key priorities: public safety and community well-being, housing affordability and anti-displacement, and economic development and labor rights. These priorities reflect the urgent needs of District 2 and demonstrate Salisbury's commitment to addressing the community's most pressing challenges.

Salisbury cites the Comprehensive Plan as something he has been engaged in deeply. Here he is back in August 2024 at the Comp Plan Forum at Rainier Arts with Rico Quirindongo, the Director of Seattle's Office of Planning & Community Development, and former Seattle City Council member Tammy Morales, whose vacant seat Salisbury is now seeking to fill.

Public Safety - A Community-Centric Approach:

Salisbury's approach to public safety emphasizes building stronger relationships between the community and law enforcement. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Salisbury advocates for increased community policing, blockwatch meetings, and community engagement around public safety initiatives.

"We need to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community," Salisbury asserts. "By fostering trust and open communication, we can create a safer environment for everyone."

Salisbury also acknowledges the need for targeted enforcement, particularly around issues like shoplifting and open-air markets. "We need to strike a balance between community engagement and enforcement," Salisbury states. "We need to ensure that our laws are upheld while also respecting the rights and dignity of all residents."

Chukundi Salisbury believes that the businesses in Little Saigon and the CID have been disproportionately impacted by crime. He said that the city needs to support these businesses and not just say that's what insurance is for.

Salisbury also believes that there needs to be more enforcement in Little Saigon and the CID, especially in terms of shoplifting and open-air drug markets. Stating that people who are not taking advantage of the resources that the city has to offer need to be arrested.

Housing Affordability - Protecting Legacy Residents:

Salisbury recognizes the critical need for affordable housing in District 2. With rising housing costs and the threat of displacement looming large, Salisbury proposes innovative solutions to protect legacy residents and ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.

"We need to prioritize the needs of our community," Salisbury emphasizes. "We need to ensure that legacy residents are not priced out of their homes and that everyone has a place to call home."

Salisbury's vision includes incorporating community AMI (Area Median Income) into the comprehensive plan, promoting co-op housing projects, and supporting initiatives that empower residents to stay in their homes.

Economic Development - Empowering Workers and Businesses:

Salisbury's commitment to economic development focuses on empowering workers and supporting local businesses. By advocating for fair labor practices, promoting job creation, and investing in small businesses, Salisbury aims to create a thriving and equitable economy in District 2.

"We need to create an economy that works for everyone," Salisbury states. "We need to ensure that workers are paid a living wage, that businesses have the support they need to succeed, and that everyone has the opportunity to participate in our economy."

Transportation - Safety and Accountability:

Salisbury recognizes the urgent need for safer streets in District 2. With concerns about traffic safety on Rainer Avenue, Salisbury proposes a multi-faceted approach to improve transportation infrastructure and promote accountability.

"We need to make our streets safer for everyone," Salisbury states. "We need to invest in traffic calming measures, promote pedestrian and cyclist safety, and ensure that drivers are held accountable for their actions."

A Proven Track Record of Service:

Salisbury's extensive volunteer work and community involvement demonstrate a deep commitment to public service. As a board member of Southeast Youth and Family Services, Real Change Homeless Newspaper Empowerment Project, and Mothers for Police Accountability, among other organizations, Salisbury has consistently championed the needs of marginalized communities.

"I believe in giving back to my community," Salisbury states. "I believe that we all have a responsibility to make our city a better place for everyone."

Qualifications for Leadership:

Salisbury's qualifications for the City Council seat extend beyond community involvement. With a deep understanding of the district's issues, a proven track record of service, and an intimate knowledge of the city's systems and processes, Salisbury possesses the skills and experience necessary to lead effectively.

"I understand the challenges facing our district," Salisbury states. "I have the experience and the knowledge to address these challenges and to make a real difference in the lives of our residents."

A Caretaker Committed to Service:

Salisbury recognizes the importance of having a caretaker in the City Council seat until the special election. By committing to serving as a caretaker and pledging to retire next year, Salisbury demonstrates a selfless dedication to the community.

A Vision for a United and Thriving District 2:

Salisbury's vision for District 2 is one of unity, prosperity, and equity. By prioritizing authentic community engagement, addressing the root causes of social issues, and empowering residents to shape the future of their neighborhoods, Salisbury offers a hopeful and inspiring vision for the district.

Conclusion:

Chukundi Salisbury's candidacy represents a unique opportunity for District 2 residents. With a deep understanding of the community's needs, a proven track record of service, and a commitment to collaborative leadership, Salisbury offers a compelling vision for the district's future.
