Breaking Borders: Seattle Artists Participate in Mexico City Art Week

Seattle artists are making impacts around the world. Recently, a group traveled to Mexico City for Mexico City Art Week, a yearly event which brings together artists from all over the world to showcase their work. Led by Seattle artist Soulma Ayers, the group installed their work at Progreso #69.

“It was beautiful, amazing, and very specifically curated,” Ayers said.

Converge Media had a crew there to document the exhibition and highlight those who travelled from the Emerald City. Emiliano Hernàndez , Daniel Vega, Marco Antonio Martínez, and Emilio Olea teamed up to bring the exhibition to life on camera, showcasing the exciting work that was done by those present.

“It’s important for me because this is my first international exhibition,” Seattle artist Perri Rhoden said.

One of the largest art weeks in the world, Mexico City art week highlights incredible work from around the world. Ayers said she was impressed and inspired by the artists and art lovers she met.

“As a Black artist from Seattle, being able to show anywhere is amazing, but especially in Mexico City. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity - you can only do this once for the first time and I hope it leads to many many more,” Ayers said.

For Rhoden, being around such variety of art was freeing. As an abstract artist, she said she deals with expectations that Black art should look a specific way. Being present at Mexico City art week re-affirmed her vision and her passion for making the art she wants to make.

“What I love about the art that I create is that I’m putting the essence of my experience and life into my work. For me, it doesn’t look like anything that I’ve seen before,” Rhoden said. “It’s a spiritual and meditative practice. I enjoy letting the paint flow.”

For the Converge Media team that was present, capturing the work of the artists and the festivities surrounding it was a monumental experience. The Mexico City based team was led by producer Emilio Olea, a talented producer and editor who was excited about the opportunity to highlight one of his city’s premiere events.
