#HealthIsWealth - Tiana Duncan to host virtual kickboxing workshop with Friends of Waterfront Seattle
Tiana Duncan, founder of Indigo Movement, is hosting a virtual kickboxing workshop on February 13th at 6 pm PST. The class, which she is running in partnership with Friends of Waterfront Seattle, is free to all. In addition to the class, there will also be a raffle with prizes from Black-owned businesses including skin care products from Helen Rose Skincare Co. and a candle set from Black Pinay.
“Health is wealth, at the end of the day,” Duncan said. “We can't continue to live our lives unless we take care of ourselves first.”
Duncan got her start in fitness during her days as a competitive swimmer. She then taught water aerobics at the Rainier Beach pool as she continued to spread her knowledge and passion to the community.
“I do feel like the human body is an amazing universe that we're still exploring, just like space and ocean,” Duncan said. “I'm just really psyched about showing people how to move, especially during this day and age where we're not all in our young 20s anymore.”
She feels that encouraging exercise and making it accessible is a critical piece of community development and growth. Duncan describes her workshops as a party, with music and simple movements where people can actually feel what muscles they are engaging.
That accessibility also spreads to getting her teachings to as many community members as possible. Especially with a virtual class, having a partner like Friends of Waterfront Seattle is critical to ensuring as many people as possible can take part.
“There are a lot of marginalized communities, especially in South Seattle, who actually don't have the resources to even stream this class,” James Te, who works with Tiana, said. “It's really important for Tiana to partner with these not for profit organizations, like Friends of Waterfront Seattle, that are bringing health and wellness free to the public.”
When the weather gets warmer, Duncan will be back on the pier, bringing her fitness classes to the community in person. For this month’s virtual class, you can find the sign up link here.
