Indigenous People’s Day March in Seattle Honors Elders, Celebrates Heritage
Yesterday, Seattle celebrated its second official Indigenous People’s Day with various events including a parade and rally at Westlake Park. The theme of the day was ‘Honoring Our Elders: Past and Present’ and the march was hosted by the United Indians Of All Tribes Foundation. Following the march, many of those present gathered at city hall.
The march featured a Salish prayer, speeches and songs as participants celebrated their heritage and raised concerns about the treatment of Indigenous people, incarceration rates, cultural genocide and more.
Throughout the march there were drum circles, songs and more. Photos by Seattle photographer Susan Fried.
