Key to Change invites the public to its 7th annual Spring Salon Fundraiser at Benaroya Hall on April 7, 2024 from 2-4pm. The Spring Salon Fundraiser is an awards ceremony that features musical performances from students who participated in the Key to Change Solo String Festival. Additionally, Dr. Sheila Edwards Lange, Chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma, will be recognized with the Community Achievement Award for her ongoing support for underserved students living in South King County.
“A student’s opportunities should not be limited by their zip code,” said executive director and founder Dr. Quinton Morris. “Key to Change,” he continued, “breaks down the systemic barriers underserved youth face by providing access to world-class music instruction in a rigorous, supportive, and safe environment.”
Key to Change has experienced enormous growth over the past four years, resulting in numerous students taking violin and viola lessons across South King County. “We never thought it was possible for us to play an instrument, let alone the violin,” said Malak Ali, a current Key to Change student. “But at Key to Change,” she said, “you can break stereotypes and gain musical literacy and confidence.”
The Spring Salon Fundraiser raises resources for underserved middle and high school students, who study the violin or viola in its program. Students who have participated in the program have performed for Dr. Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States, made their professional debuts with the Seattle Symphony, engaged in various youth-led activities, and are young, poised leaders making a difference in their respective communities.
