Maritime High School is open to all students, regardless of local school district assignment

DES MOINES, Wash. (December 13, 2021): Maritime High School, a public school for students with maritime interests, will open applications to incoming ninth and tenth graders for the 2022-23 school year. Enrollment opens on January 3 and concludes on January 31, 2022. While the school is part of the Highline Public School

District, students do not need to live within district boundaries. Maritime High School admission is open to all students in Washington state.

Maritime High School is a collaboration between four local partners: the Northwest Maritime Center, Highline  Public Schools, the Duwamish River Community Coalition, and the Port of Seattle. It provides an innovative,  project-based learning experience that allows students to learn about careers in the maritime industry and marine sciences. In its first year, Maritime High School welcomed an inaugural class of 37 ninth graders.

Students at Maritime High School combine core academic disciplines such as reading, writing, math, social studies,  and science with project-based learning opportunities – including weekly outings on the schools’ vessel, Admiral  Jack, and other community maritime learning activities. Students also receive mentorship and internship opportunities in the maritime sector, learning skills such as vessel operations, marine engineering, and environmental law.

“Maritime High School is a wonderful opportunity for students with maritime interests to receive a focused, hands-on education in small classes,” says Tremain Holloway, Principal of Maritime High School. “Students will graduate  Maritime High School able to solve real-world problems – opening doors to careers in the Maritime industry or to  furthering their education at a college or university.”
