Mayor Harrell Taps HBCU Alum Shon Barnes as Seattle's Next Top Cop

In a press release this morning, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell announced the appointment of Shon Barnes, the current Madison, Wisconsin Chief of Police, as the next Chief of the Seattle Police Department (SPD). The appointment follows a national search and comes after Barnes's successful implementation of crime reduction strategies in Madison.

Barnes's Track Record in Madison

During his tenure in Madison, Barnes has overseen significant decreases in crime, including a 67% decrease in homicides, a 40% decrease in auto thefts, and a 19% decrease in reports of shots fired in 2024. He has been recognized for his community-focused approach and efforts to improve the diversity of the police department, with 28% of officers now being women.

Harrell's Vision for Seattle's Police Department

Mayor Harrell emphasized Barnes's leadership skills and compassionate approach, stating that he is the right person to lead the SPD forward. Harrell highlighted Barnes's experience and forward-looking vision, which align with the city's "One Seattle" commitment to safety for all residents.

Community Engagement and Search Process

The selection process involved input from community members through "Safer Seattle" forums and an online survey. The mayor's office sought to recruit qualified candidates from across the country, with 57 total applications received. The final decision was made after a competitive exam and interviews with the top candidates.

Barnes's Background and Qualifications

Shon Barnes has a 24-year career in law enforcement, including leadership roles in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Chicago, Illinois. He holds a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), as well as a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati, and a BA in History/Pre-Law from Elizabeth City State University, another esteemed HBCU. Barnes has also served as a subject matter expert for the U.S. Department of Justice and has been recognized for his work in evidence-based policing.

Focus on Community Policing and Data-Driven Strategies

Barnes expressed his commitment to community policing and collaboration with Seattle residents. He aims to work alongside SPD officers to uphold the core values of the department and build trust within the community. His background in data analytics and evidence-based crime policy suggests that he will bring a data-driven approach to his leadership in Seattle.

Transition and Future of SPD

Interim Chief Sue Rahr, who has led the SPD since May 2024, will continue to support the department during the transition to Chief Barnes's leadership.
