Taproot Theatre Reopens Newly-Renovated Jewell Mainstage with "A Raisin in the Sun"
Seattle's vibrant theater scene is buzzing with excitement as Taproot Theatre Company gears up to launch its 2025 Mainstage season with a powerful and timeless classic. Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" will not only kick off the season but will also mark the grand reopening of the newly-renovated Jewell Mainstage Theatre.
Directed by Associate Artistic Director Bretteney Beverly, "A Raisin in the Sun" tells the story of the Younger family, who dream of a better life after receiving a life insurance payout. Their plans to move to a new home in a predominantly white neighborhood are met with racial intolerance, testing their resilience and dreams. This 1959 masterpiece, as noted by the New York Times, "changed American theater forever" and continues to resonate deeply with audiences today.
The timing of this production is especially significant as it coincides with the reopening of the Jewell Mainstage Theatre, which underwent extensive renovations thanks to a dedicated grant from the State of Washington. The improvements promise to enhance the theater experience for all patrons.
"A Raisin in the Sun" opens on March 21, 2025, and runs through April 19, 2025. The 2025 Mainstage season, titled "Timed Exposure," also features an exciting lineup including "Always… Patsy Cline," "Murder on the Links," and "The Importance of Being Earnest."
