Trae Holiday Gets Her Plant On at Flora & Fauna!
By Trae Holiday
#SupportBlackBusiness - Hey y'all, Trae Holiday here, and let me tell you, I just had the most AMAZING time at Flora & Fauna in the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle. If you're a plant lover, a vinyl enthusiast, or someone who just appreciates good vibes and eco-friendly living, this is THE spot you need to check out.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with the lovely Ashley Palmer, the owner of this incredible space, and she gave me the full tour and some serious plant mom tips! Walking into Flora & Fauna is like stepping into another world. Ashley describes it as "a beautifully curated collection of vinyl records, plants for their home or office, and eco-friendly goods for their homes in a beautiful vintage setting, and one of the most historic buildings in downtown Seattle." And she's not wrong! The atmosphere is just… perfect.
First things first, let's talk plants! As a self-proclaimed “new plant mom,” I needed some serious guidance. Ashley was a lifesaver! She showed me some beginner-friendly plants, specifically Peperomia. "These are Peperomia," she explained, "and they're two different varieties, basically a solid green one and one that's variegated... Peperomia are very easy to care for and that you water them about once every two weeks. They're pet safe… and they do tolerate lower light situations, but do best in medium to bright and direct light." See, this is gold! I needed to know all of this, because right now, I'm mostly just winging it with "water and sunlight."
But Flora & Fauna is so much more than just plants. Ashley is passionate about sustainability, and it shows. "It's very important to us that the products that we stock here in our shop aren't ones that are going to end up inside of a landfill and further contribute to the plastic problem that we have on planet Earth," she said. And she's got everything from reusable makeup remover pads to eco-friendly kitchen and laundry products. It's all about making conscious choices, and I'm here for it!
And let's not forget the vinyl! Ashley's got an incredible selection, and it's clear she's a true music lover. She mentioned her favorites like "the Kendrick Lamar vinyls, the Tyler the Creator vinyls. And I really love that Lauren Hill unplugged vinyl." You know I was vibing with that! It's the total package here: "It's plants, it's vinyl records, it's eco friendly home goods, it's… just the perfect vibe, things that you want to surround yourself in in your space, which is great, greenery. Awesome tunes and then products that aren't going to harm the planet." Couldn't have said it better myself!
Ashley also told me about their “plant nights,” where folks get together to make plant crafts and connect. It’s all about “community here and fostering community.” How cool is that? They even partner with other local businesses for these events.
In these times, it's so important to support local businesses, and Flora & Fauna is definitely one worth supporting. As Ashley shared, "Sales are very slow. Foot traffic is very slow, and those of us who are right in the thick of it are really starting to feel the brunt of all of the pressure." Let's show them some love, y'all!
So, if you're looking for an amazing place to learn more about plants, find some awesome vinyl, and pick up some eco-friendly goodies, look no further than Flora & Fauna. As I said to Ashley, "kudos to you and the team for creating a true vibe that is in the legacy and essence of the historic pioneer store district. I glad you're here, and y'all definitely want to come and check out flora and fauna."
Trust me, you won't regret it! Go check out Flora & Fauna and tell Ashley that Trae sent you!
