Tubman Center for Health & Freedom Purchases Land for Health Center to Serve Patients In Community
Seattle, WA – Today, the Tubman Center for Health & Freedom announced it has purchased the future site of a transformative health center that will serve 8,000 patients seeking care designed to meet the needs of marginalized communities, such as Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA+ people.
“Tubman Health will make a life-and-death difference for thousands of us who have nowhere to turn for care we can trust,” said Danisha Jefferson-Abye, Tubman Health Founder & Chief Operating Officer. The organization has led its patients in a unique process to design its health services and programs, as part of a national model for healthcare innovation.
“The healthcare system isn’t working for us. We have solutions,” said Tubman Health Board President Nacala Ayele. “We know those solutions can help improve healthcare for everyone.”
Slated to open in 2026, the Tubman Center for Health & Freedom will feature:
40,000 square foot facility one block from the Rainier Beach light rail station
Integrative primary and preventive care across the lifespan for 8,000 patients and health promotion programs for 16,000, including mental/behavioral health services
Unique care model integrating western, alternative, and cultural medicine
Focus on social determinants of health – factors such as education, employment, built environment, and racism – in treatment plans and in policy advocacy
Research and evaluation arm to study impact of care model and share findings
The Tubman Center for Health & Freedom will also be a hub for community members who want to become health professionals, offering career pathways and training across practice areas.
“We truly need places like Tubman Health that can welcome practitioners of color into the field and support us in being responsive to our communities,” said FrancXs Placide, Tubman Health Board Secretary and a Physician Assistant experienced in leading health system transformation.
Since its founding in May 2020, Tubman Health has inspired more than 28,000 community members to call for support from elected officials, philanthropy, and other leaders.
“Owning land for the health center is a huge milestone, and we’re just getting started,” said Tubman Health Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships Emijah Smith. “We invite anyone inspired by our vision to join us in building a future of health for all.”
