Umoja Fest 2023 Celebrates Community Joy, History of the Central District

This year’s Umoja Fest Parade was filled with memorable moments, good vibes, and a showcase of community from around the Central District and beyond. One of the most special days of the year, Umoja Fest is part of Africatown Community Land Trust’s #SummerOfSoulSeries which is aimed at creating events centered on creating space in the Central District for Black people to celebrate Black joy, innovation, business, and community.

“Shoutout to everyone that’s keeping this tradition going. Growing up in the CD, I remember trying to catch the candy in the parade, walking down the hill to Judkins after, and even marching in the parade a few times,” Gordon said.

We were there to capture all the joy, community and poignancy that was present at the yearly event. You can also see our video recap featuring Besa Gordon above
