Last July, during All-Star Week, a promise was made to the youth of South Seattle by MLB Commissioner Manfred, Mayor Harrell, and the Mariners. They dedicated Rainier Playfield as an MLB Legacy project and vowed to transform it into a state-of-the-art facility, ensuring children could enjoy baseball year-round. This commitment was intended to be the lasting legacy of the All-Star festivities in Seattle.

Fast forward to last Saturday, and that promise was fulfilled. Besa Gordon, a prominent figure in the community, stood front and center as the brand-new Rainier Playfield was unveiled. The field boasted turf, adjustable base settings catering to different age groups and both baseball and softball players. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a celebratory affair, complete with a parade featuring teams from the local Little League, and special appearances by beloved mascots like the Mariners Moose and legendary player Edgar Martinez.

For those involved with Back2Besa, an initiative close to the hearts of many in the community, this moment held profound significance. Childhood memories were intertwined with the history of Rainier Playfield. However, over time, the field had fallen into disrepair, reaching a point where games had to be canceled due to poor conditions, particularly after rainfall.

The revitalization of Rainier Playfield represents more than just a physical transformation; it symbolizes hope and opportunity for the youth of South Seattle. No longer will they be hindered by inadequate facilities; instead, they have a world-class venue where they can hone their skills, build friendships, and create lasting memories.

Moreover, this project underscores the power of collaboration between public and private entities to invest in communities and provide resources for future generations.
