The Vanishing Seattle exhibit will display signage and artifacts of Old Seattle businesses, venues, and gathering places: many vanished; some still here; and all a part of our collective culture, history, and memories. Included are iconic spaces for countless Seattleites: RKCNDY, Mama’s Mexican Kitchen, The Turf Lounge, and many more.
The exhibition will offer a reflection on the changing face of our city, a reminder of the impermanence of urban spaces and the profound impact of “progress”. With the help of folks across the Seattle, we’ve brought together a diverse collection of sign works – from hand-painted to carved - that have shaped the city’s visual and cultural landscape over the decades. The exhibit is an ode to the artisans and spaces that brought soul to the city, and a celebration of the ephemeral beauty that informs our identities. As we bear witness to the disappearance of these landmarks and art forms from our streets, we invite you to contribute your own stories of places loved and lost; learn about spaces you didn’t know about; and engage in a visual dialogue that pays tribute to their legacies.
