Ann Gaston Polite: A Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Fashion Design
Ann Gaston Polite, renowned fashion designer and creator of Gaston Gear, recently appeared on The Day With Trae to discuss her journey in fashion, her design inspirations, and her latest creations.
Polite, who knew from a young age that she wanted to be a designer, shared that she initially struggled to find role models in the industry. This lack of representation, however, did not deter her from pursuing her dream. She began designing clothes for her dolls and herself in high school, eventually transitioning into creating custom pieces for full-figured women in 1979.
Gaston Gear is known for its signature Afrocentric designs, with Polite emphasizing the spiritual relevance and intentionality behind each piece. She hand-selects fabrics, drawing inspiration from their textures and patterns. Polite also shared her commitment to using authentic African fabrics, some of which are made in villages and the bush.
During the interview, Polite showcased two of her latest designs: the Fly Vest and the African Asoke. The Fly Vest, designed to be a symbol of family protection, features cowrie shells for prosperity and an emblem representing the family on the back. The African Asoke, a garment traditionally worn by royalty, is made from strips of woven fabric and adorned with metallic accents.
Polite's passion for her craft and her dedication to creating unique, meaningful pieces resonated throughout the interview. She encouraged viewers to embrace her designs as their own, emphasizing the importance of feeling good and confident in what you wear.
