Higher Learning: ECSU’s Dr. Wade stops by to uplift the North Carolina HBCU

WATCH: Chukundi Salisbury, Elizabeth City State University Class of 1992 sat down with Dr. Kevin Wade, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs for a discussion about opportunities at ECSU for students in the Seattle area.

Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), a historically Black university with a legacy spanning over a century, is not only making higher education affordable but also fostering a nurturing environment where students thrive. In a recent interview with ECSU alumnus Chukundi Salisbury, Dr. Kevin Wade, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Interim Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, shared insights into the university's unique offerings, its unwavering commitment to student success, and the transformative journeys of students who find their home at ECSU.

Chukundi's Journey: From the Pacific Northwest to Viking Pride

Chukundi Salisbury's path to ECSU was paved by a rich family legacy. His father, a proud ECSU alumnus from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the university's values and commitment to academic excellence. Salisbury's journey was further enriched by the footsteps of his great aunt, who also graced the halls of ECSU, solidifying the family's connection to this esteemed institution.

"ECSU is in my blood," Salisbury declared. "It's a legacy that I am proud to carry forward." His passion for the university is not merely a personal sentiment but a testament to the enduring impact that ECSU has had on generations of students and their families.

Salisbury candidly shared his initial culture shock, having grown up in a predominantly non-Black environment. However, he quickly found a sense of belonging and community at ECSU.

"It was a culture shock for me," Salisbury admitted. "But I learned valuable lessons about accountability and excellence." His experiences at ECSU shaped his personal and professional growth, ultimately leading him to become a passionate advocate for the university.

In 2021, another Salisbury was added to the family legacy when his daughter, Alma Salisbury, graduated from ECSU with a Degree in Biology.  She currently leads a lab at Fred Hutchinson in Seattle.

Dr. Wade's Journey: A Hometown Hero's Return

Dr. Kevin Wade's connection to ECSU runs deep. Growing up in Enfield, North Carolina, a small town just an hour and a half away from the university, he witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. ECSU provided him with opportunities he might not have had otherwise.

"ECSU changed my life," Dr. Wade affirmed. "It instilled in me a sense of purpose and a commitment to giving back." His journey from student government leader to Vice Chancellor exemplifies the university's dedication to nurturing leadership and empowering its students to achieve their dreams.

Affordability: A Gateway to Opportunity

ECSU's affordability remains a cornerstone of its mission. With in-state tuition at a remarkably low $500 per semester and out-of-state tuition at $2,500 per semester, the university is opening doors for students across the country.

Salisbury emphasized the significance of this affordability, stating, "It's really criminal not to consider Elizabeth City State University... This is, in fact, the most affordable school." He further highlighted that a student can have an all-inclusive college experience at ECSU for under $20,000 a year.

A Soaring Aviation Program

ECSU's aviation program continues to attract students from across the nation, including those from aviation hubs like Seattle. The program's growth, with an expanding fleet of aircraft and state-of-the-art facilities, is a testament to its success.

Dr. Wade shared, "We are now at about 14 or 15 [airplanes], and about to purchase, I think, two more." He also highlighted the program's strong partnerships with major airlines and the United States Coast Guard, providing students with invaluable opportunities for internships and career development.

A Culture of Care: Nurturing Student Success

ECSU's commitment to student success extends beyond academics. The university fosters a culture of care, providing students with the support they need to thrive.

Dr. Wade emphasized the university's holistic approach to student well-being, stating, "We know that mental health as well as physical health are very important these days, and so we take a holistic approach to that." The university's dedicated Student Counseling Center, Career Development Center, and various support services ensure that students feel valued and empowered.

A Vibrant Student Life Experience

ECSU offers a vibrant student life experience with a wide array of extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations. Students can participate in student government, Greek life, cultural organizations, and various other activities that enrich their college experience and foster personal growth. The university's strong sense of community and camaraderie creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.

A Bright Future Fueled by Growth and Innovation

With its commitment to affordability, academic excellence, and a culture of care, ECSU is poised for a bright future. The university's consistent enrollment growth, expanding programs, and strong partnerships are a testament to its unwavering dedication to its mission.
