Keanna Pickett Announces Plans to Keep The Postman Open Following Recent Vandalism
Dear community leaders, business owners, landlords, valued customers, and family,
I hope this message finds you well amidst what has been a shocking and challenging week. The events that have unfolded have had an undeniable impact on both myself and The Postman, and it has left me questioning the fairness of it all. However, amidst these circumstances, I have made the decision to bring my in-laws back into the business, training and supporting them to eventually run their own store and uphold the legacy of our beloved D'Vonne.
Over the past few days, I have had the opportunity to connect with many individuals, including D'Vonne's mother. One thing that has become abundantly clear is that nobody wants The Postman to close its doors. In light of this, I kindly ask for a reconsideration regarding our space on Union. I cannot explain the fear and confusion surrounding the recent act of vandalism against my store after a beautiful peaceful candlelight vigil. It seems to be a scare tactic employed by someone who benefits from the closure of my "Black-owned business." No other establishment was targeted, and I refuse to be driven out by gentrification. It simply isn't fair, and being scared for my life means being scared for all lives.
The targeted attacks against Black-owned small businesses in the central district are perplexing, and I am standing alongside fellow business owners and the community to firmly declare that we will not be pushed away. This week alone, we have hired four additional staff members. We have taken steps to repair our window, with an appointment scheduled for Wednesday 11/1/23.
I want to emphasize that I am not in a position to just up and leave because someone took the time to target my shop. I am also moving forward with The Store at Willow Crossing Apartments. It brings me great comfort to have the support of the city, and we will be organizing a press conference in the near future. I am hopeful that I can count on your support, as we have always had. Closing a Black-owned business to ensure the safety of others is not the narrative we wish to share. We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to stand together in solidarity.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. I am hopeful that we can move forward and transition into the new space, as we have been diligently working towards. The unity and support of our community mean the world to us, and we remain unwavering in our commitment to serve you.
With gratitude and solidarity,
KeAnna Rose Pickett
