Métier Brewing Company Brings Black-Owned Brewing Home to the Central District

“Someone said to me that maybe folks of Color don’t enjoy a good beer. I called bull****,” Rodney Hines, owner and founder of Métier Brewing, said.

“I realized I needed to do something to create a space that didn’t exist for me.”

Alongside Harold Fields, the owner of Umami Kushi, Hines has created a Black-owned brewery right in Seattle’s Central District. Located at E Cherry St and 27th Ave, the taproom hosts a variety of events and is open to the community seven days a week.

“When we were gonna do a space with food and beer, Fields was the first person I thought of. This is about brotherhood,” Hines said.

“The partnership came about through me and Rodney’s respect for one another, and then we talked about having a place in Seattle,” Fields said. “To be able to walk out and feel this certain pride is amazing.”

Hines says Métier use their cans to tell a story not only of how this Black-owned brewery came to be but also of the community members who make it what it is.

“There’s a story told for every can. Part of that story is the artist for every can, and in some of the cases it’s the ingredients behind the beer in those cans,” Hines said.

The brewery is a unique space in which both the beer and food come straight from the community. You can check it out at 2616 E Cherry St, Seattle, WA 98122.
