Reliving the Magic of WildLanterns at the Woodland Park Zoo
By Besa Gordon
It's that time of year again when the Woodland Park Zoo transforms into a magical wonderland of lights for WildLanterns! Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to experience this event firsthand, and I'm excited to share my memories and some behind-the-scenes insights with you. So, let's take a trip back in time and relive the magic of my personal tour of WildLanterns with Craig Newberry, a Public Relations Specialist for the Woodland Park Zoo.
"So, Craig, for someone who's never been to WildLanterns, what should they expect?" I asked, eager to learn more.
Craig's face lit up as he explained, "It's all about fun! WildLanterns is our annual holiday lights experience, and we've got some incredible displays this year, from giant pandas to whimsical unicorns. There's something for everyone."
As we ventured into the zoo, I was immediately blown away. "Wow, this is way more than I expected!" I exclaimed, taking in the dazzling array of lanterns.
Craig chuckled, "We like to surprise people. The artists who create these lanterns are incredibly talented." He pointed out a particularly impressive display featuring a majestic dragon. "They even incorporate special effects, like smoke coming out of the dragon's nostrils!"

I was amazed by the intricate details of each lantern. "These are incredible! How do you guys create these?" I asked.
Craig explained, "We order the lanterns from a company in China called Tianyu. They ship them over after Labor Day, and our team works tirelessly to set them all up in time for the opening."
As we wandered through the illuminated pathways, I couldn't help but feel like a kid again. The whimsical displays, the festive music, and the magical atmosphere all combined to create an unforgettable experience.
"This is such a great event for families," I remarked. "But it would also be a perfect date night or a fun outing with friends."
Craig nodded in agreement. "Absolutely! WildLanterns is for everyone."
As the night drew to a close, I turned to Craig and asked, "What's your favorite part of WildLanterns?"
He paused for a moment, then replied, "Seeing the joy on people's faces. That's what makes it all worthwhile."
I couldn't agree more. WildLanterns is a truly special event, and I highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance. It's a fantastic way to support the Woodland Park Zoo and its amazing animals, all while creating lasting memories with your loved ones.
Remember, WildLanterns runs from November 15th through January 19th, 2025, so grab your tickets now at zoo.org and prepare for a night of wonder and enchantment!
