Seattle falls 0-2 in series against Tampa Bay Rays

By Bel Garcia

Mariners were unable to pull off the comeback on J.P. Crawford bobblehead night, despite two scoring runs and a homer by Eugenio Suarez. The home run by Suarez going 387 feet and coming late in the game gave the Mariners hope, but Seattle ran out of time.

Seattle started the first inning with good momentum as both Suarez and Frazier were able to get to home plate early in the first inning. The Rays would find their groove and quickly take the lead in the second inning making it to home plate three times of their own. In a game of back and forth scoring the Mariners would then put up two points at the bottom of the fourth with runs from both Suarez and Winker. Then going on a scoring drought for the next three innings and a costly error at the top of the fifth inning would tie the game. A throwing error that resulted in the ball bouncing through the middle of the 1st and 2nd base ended in a run by Tampa Bays’ Randy Arozarena and would tie the game up at 4-4 to move into the sixth inning. The Rays were able to score once again in the seventh inning, while the Mariners did not start their comeback until the bottom of the eighth.

It was Jarred Kelenic’s turn to bat, and he delivered an absolute bomb that traveled 400 feet at the bottom of the eighth giving the Mariners a 6-5 lead with his homer and getting Julio Rodriguez to home plate. The lead didn’t last long as TB Rays’ Manuel Margot hit a 3-run homer to start the top of the ninth and what would ultimately be all they needed to pull this one away from the Mariners. The loss didn’t come without a fight, Eugenio Suarez brought the Mariners within one making the score 8-7 with a 387-foot homer at the bottom of the ninth filling the ballpark with hopes for another run. Unfortunately, Rodriguez and Toro could not come up with another score and the Mariners lost the game by one point on night two of this series.
