The Melody Behind the Magic: An Interview with L&M Hair Studio's Visionary Founder

Down I-5, in the Rose City, Melody Brown, a passionate entrepreneur and hairstylist, has created a haven for Black hair and beauty with her salon, L&M Hair Company. Melody's journey began in elementary school, where she faced teasing and insecurity about her hair, a common experience for many young Black girls navigating predominantly white spaces. Determined to take control of her narrative and embrace her natural beauty, she started practicing braiding on her own hair, discovering a hidden talent and an unshakeable passion that would ultimately shape her future.

Building Confidence and Community

As Melody honed her braiding skills, she began to realize the transformative power of hair. A good hairstyle could do more than just enhance one's appearance; it could boost confidence, shift perspectives, and empower individuals to embrace their unique beauty. This realization fueled her desire to create a space where Black people could feel seen, heard, and celebrated for their authentic selves.

In 2020, amidst the uncertainty and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Melody took a bold leap of faith and launched L&M Hair Company as an online store. The overwhelming response from the community affirmed her belief in the need for such a space. The following year, she opened her first brick-and-mortar salon in Southeast Portland, a vibrant hub of Black culture and community. The success of this location led to the opening of a second salon in 2023, further expanding her reach and impact.

The rapid growth and unwavering support for L&M is a testament to the strong and vibrant Black community in Portland, who recognized and embraced Melody's vision for a high-quality, reliable salon that caters to their unique hair needs and celebrates their inherent beauty.
More Than Just a Salon: The L&M Hair Academy

Melody's vision extends far beyond simply offering salon services. Recognizing the lack of opportunities and accessible education for aspiring hairstylists specializing in textured hair, she established the L&M Hair Academy. This academy provides a comprehensive and affordable pathway for individuals to learn the fundamentals of hair care, braiding, locks, extensions, and natural hair styling, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the industry.

The academy has already made a significant impact, helping numerous students gain licensure and secure fulfilling jobs in the hair care industry. By creating this career pathway, Melody is not only empowering individuals to pursue their dreams but also contributing to the growth, diversity, and inclusivity of the beauty industry as a whole.

A Welcoming Space for All

L&M Hair Company is a sanctuary of self-love, a celebration of Black beauty, and a welcoming space where everyone feels comfortable, supported, and empowered to embrace their unique identity. Melody and her team of talented stylists, each hand-picked for their skill, passion, and commitment to excellence, offer a wide range of services, from natural hair styling and intricate braids to luxurious hair extensions and cosmetic tattooing.

Whether you're a long-time Portland resident or new to the city, L&M is the go-to destination for all your hair care needs. With its convenient locations, talented stylists, warm and inviting atmosphere, and unwavering commitment to excellence, L&M is redefining Black hair and beauty in Portland, setting a new standard for inclusivity, empowerment, and self-love.
Spreading Black Joy

For Melody, Black joy is more than just a feeling; it's a movement. It's about representation, empowerment, and celebrating Black beauty in all its forms. She is proud to be a part of the growing movement of Black-owned businesses in Portland, creating spaces where Black people can thrive, connect, and feel a sense of belonging.

Through her salon, academy, and unwavering commitment to community, Melody Brown is making a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals. She is a true inspiration, a role model, and a shining example of Black excellence in the beauty industry. Her story is a reminder that with passion, determination,

If you're ever in Portland, I highly recommend stopping by L&M. You'll be greeted with warmth, welcomed with open arms, and leave feeling like a million bucks. As Melody says, "This is a place that you can come, and you can feel welcome and you can feel supported. You will not be judged here." And that, in my opinion, is the true mark of a successful business.
