Transforming Trauma into Triumph: Mike Ford's Journey to Championing Black Men's Mental Wellness
YOUniversal FIT Studio, with the support of a $10,000 grant from the Tacoma Black Fund, is launching "Men Uplift," a groundbreaking program dedicated to the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of Black men. This initiative is spearheaded by Mike Ford, whose personal journey from emotional abuser to advocate has inspired this critical program.
Growing up surrounded by hypermasculinity and emotional suppression, Mike didn't realize his behaviors towards women were emotionally abusive. Through therapy, he confronted his pain and trauma, leading him to champion the cause of Black men's mental health. "I used to think that as long as I wasn't hitting anyone, I wasn’t abusive. Therapy helped me see the emotional damage I was inflicting. It was a hard pill to swallow, but it was necessary for me to change. 'Men Uplift' is my way of giving back and helping other men see that it's okay to seek help and change their ways for the betterment of our families." - said Mike Ford,
"Men Uplift" offers a holistic approach to mental health, including therapy sessions, fitness classes, and spiritual workshops. Dr. William Carrillo, a licensed therapist leading the sessions, emphasizes the program's trauma-informed approach, addressing the deep-rooted issues Black men face.
The Tacoma Black Fund grant will enable YOUniversal FIT Studio to reach more men, providing tools for managing anger, discussing vulnerabilities, and building healthier relationships. The program includes bi-weekly sessions featuring fitness classes, mental wellness talks, refreshments, and prayer.
"Men Uplift" is a call to action for Black men in Tacoma to come together, break down taboos, and prioritize their mental health. For more information and to join the program, visit https://www.youniversalfit.com/ or contact YOUniversal FIT Studio at (253) 385-0114.
