KD Hall Recognized by Seattle Storm for Empowering Women and Girls
The Seattle Storm recognized KD Hall during a halftime ceremony on July 24 as part of their Believe in Women Night presented by Symetra. Hall was joined by Ljeoma Oluo and Joycelyn Thomas. The event is part of Force4Change, the franchise’s social justice platform.
King County Elections Calls for Removal of Unauthorized Ballot Drop Box Signs
As voters began to receive their ballots over the weekend, King County Elections began receiving reports of suspicious and intimidating signs placed near ballot drop boxes, warning voters that the drop box is “under surveillance.” The signs feature a QR code for placing “election incident” reports. Located around King County, these signs appear to be a targeted effort undertaken by party-affiliated activists to intimidate and dissuade voters from using secure ballot drop boxes.
Community Home at Beacon Center Adds Day Program for Young Adults
The rechristened Community Home at Beacon Center now offers more aid to young adults experiencing homelessness and new programming with a mental health focus to serve young adults ages 18-24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The Day Program opened on July 11. The new programming expands activities at the center which also serves as an overnight shelter from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily.
The Seattle Community Police Commission is Disappointed in the Findings of the Charleena Lyles Inquest
The Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) is disappointed in the inquest’s findings in the fatal shooting of Charleena Lyles’ by Seattle police officers. The CPC hoped that the new reformed inquest would produce a better process where the coroner’s office would provide facts on Lyles’s shooting, and that her family would be able to participate.

The following statement is from Karen Koehler, attorney for the family of Charleena Lyles after today’s findings of Seattle officers who were found justified in Charleena Lyles’ death: “Charleena Lyles’ family rejects the ultimate findings from the inquest jury today. During the 7 days of the inquest proceeding a solid and unflinching blue wall justified each and every action of its officers. The process focused only on the officers’ states of mind. DEEL Invests $1.5 Million to Advance Youth Leadership and Cultural Education
SEATTLE (June 28) - The Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) announced awards totaling $1.5 million to support the leadership and cultural education of more than 1,500 Black, Indigenous, immigrant, refugee, and youth of color in Seattle.

When COVID-19 hit, Jhitana Ball wondered how she was going to keep her 11-year-old daughter Princess motivated and engaged as school facilities closed and on-line learning began. She discovered the Scholars Project through a friend and signed her up.
Beneath the umbrella of the King/Pierce County-based Life Enrichment Group (L.E.G.), the Scholars Project offers academic support and enrichment activities for youth of color in middle school. Upon completion, students embrace a new perspective and are ready for academic success.

ONE SEATTLE Presents: Juneteenth “THE SONGS OF BLACK FOLK” Music of Resistance & Hope
This Concert will expose the audience to the Negro Spirituals and the diverse musical traditions that they have spawned including, Gospel, jazz, R&B, and even Hip-Hop. The Conductors will guide a journey through a musical culture that has functioned as a tool of resistance and as a source of hope for a Black people who have endured four centuries of white supremacy and its unrelenting assault on Black lives and Black bodies. The intent of this Concert is to use music to connect the African American struggle for freedom and justice with the struggles of other Americans who have had to fight their way in from the margins of our society.

Maintain, inspect, and operate a variety of equipment such as hydraulic aerial lift trucks, hand and power saws, compressors, wood chippers, winches, blowers, stump cutters, and other field equipment. Plant, water, and prune young trees. Spray or inject trees with pesticides. One year of experience is required.
Black and PoC youth step into the spotlight for Seattle Theatre Group’s ELEVATE
Art might not be able to combat systemic racism overnight. But organizers behind ELEVATE—Seattle Theatre Group’s spoken-word poetry showcase—are hoping that art can empower Black and Brown youth navigating oppression everyday. Coming up in June, ELEVATE returns to the Moore Theatre for the second year in a row—and for the first time as an in-person performance due to the pandemic. This is a free event created by and for Black people and other People of Color. However, all are welcome and invited to attend.

Hope Corps Is Now Open And Offering Funding to Creatives
The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is opening a new funding program, Hope Corps, that connects under- and unemployed workers in the creative industries with career opportunities. The application is open now through June 6, 2022.
Rainier Avenue Radio Purchases The Historic Columbia City Theater
Following a year of negotiation and fundraising, the Cultural Space Agency and Rainier Avenue Radio are proud to announce their partnership, and their purchase of the historic Columbia City Theater. With support from the Strategic Investment Fund, as well as direct philanthropy from local supporters, the two organizations have acquired the Theater for $3.2 million and plan to reopen a fully renovated facility in 2023. Through the creation of the New Columbia City Theater Trust, cultural community members and neighbors will have the opportunity to be direct owners of, and investors in, the property.
